Ok, I'll ask the experts... the DPC Nation!

I'm heading out to Philadelphia and New Jersey this weekend to do some architectural photography for a local company, and oddly enough for a life-long Pennsylvanian, I've never been to downtown Philadelphia.

What I NEED to know, obviously, is where I should go to get an "authentic" cheesesteak sandwich while I'm there! What are THE places the locals would bring someone?

I'm also planning to check out the Liberty Bell, but I'll admit it's lower on the list than the cheesesteak :)

Pat's
Geno's
Jim's

I've only ever been to Jim's and the cheese wiz that all three use, I think, is not to my liking. I know you can get other cheeses on them but what's authentic? I get provolone. Jim's is right on South Street and closest to Center City. The other two are further south, say about 10 or so blocks from South St.

PM jmlelii he knows more about it.

1) Geno's
2) Pat's

If you want to get them authentic Philly, get them with Cheez Whiz - I personally just get them with American cheese, but I didn't grow up in Philly.

The Liberty Bell has it's own ultra-high-security house now, haven't been there since they opened it. But it isn't very close to those cheesesteak icons in South Philly - you might want to check out South Street in between.

Just tell them whether you want it 'wit or witout'. LOL.

Cheese Whiz is not authentic....it was not even on the market until a 15-20 years after the Philly Cheesesteak was 'invented'. American or provolone are both better....they at least congeal a bit, the whiz and the grease go everywhere...

I'm thinking provolone is the way to go :)

Thanks for the advice -- I'll be heading east in just a bit!

Just wanted to let everyone who was concerned about my choice of cheesesteak know that I took the advice of those who suggested Geno's, and I LOVED it!

The sandwich was just awesome, and I even had an opportunity to ask the owner himself to pose in front of the shop (and yes, I spoke English while asking him to be in a picture)!

I 'll be there (phila) in a month - should i make the effort to go to Genos?

And is it required I look at the guy in the green pants and ponytail? that's enough to ruin my appetite!

I'd highly recommend it! The bun was really fresh, the onions were done just right. Gave me the hiccups.

The green pants dude is optional... just ask for it "witout greenie" or something.
