We're taking a road trip to RI for a nieces wedding next week, and I'm looking for possible photo opportunities in New England. So far we have Mystic Seaport, Plymouth Rock (Pilgrim Village), and Block Island on the agenda. Any other suggestions?

I've been to RI a few times. I have relatives up there, but it has been about 10 years or more since I have been there. Mystic Seaport is in CT from what I understand. Plymouth Rock is Massachusetts. lol. Block Island is 'ok' but not great. I would suggest heading to Newport. If they still have it there is something called "ten mile drive". Along the drive there are some fantastic things like famous mansions and yachts, beautiful ocean beaches for sunsets, great rock formations on those beaches to, fabulous landscapes, lighthouses, and the Portsmouth bridge is nice to. If you want city scapes Providence is the place to go for that. In Warren, you can hop a sunset cruise on one of the boats there. In Bristol, Colts Park has some very nice scenery and ocean views. There is also Narragansett Bay and the gorgeous lighthouses up there. Don't worry about the traveling. You can cross the whole state in 45 minutes. :)

I assume you are talking about Plimoth Plantation (yes, that really is how they spell it)? I hope it is, because that place is fantastic, make sure to allow yourself enough time there (thanks for the tip to go there, Bear_music).

The village is rather picturesque, but the most fascinating part is speaking to the staff. They wear appropriate costumes, and act as if it was 1620ish, not 2006. They are all very knowledgable, and love to talk about "their" life.

It feels as if they really live there..... the gardening, the chores, the cooking, the visiting - even weddings - are all wonderful to watch and photograph.
I'll cross fingers that you'll get a day where there are only HALF a million people there - it's a popular place!

Going to see the Mayflower II as part of the visit is also worth it.
Photography was allowed everywhere...... phew.

I second the Newport idea. It's georgeous and there will be photo ops all over the place. The mansions, the Tennis Hall of Fame, the bridge and yachts are all amazing. If you go there, make sure to see Bannister's wharf and the cliff walk, in addition to the ten-mile drive already suggested. The Astor's Beechwood is one of the smallest mansions, but they have very well done "living history" tours. I see on their website that they're also having a series of classical music concerts there in July. Boy, am I homesick now!

Edit: Looks like it's big band, not classical music concerts this summer.

Also, don't forget Naragansett Bay and Point Judith. There is a neat lighthouse at Point Judith. Also, you're not that far from Cape Cod. There is some great photo ops there. Maestro is correct, Mystic is in Connecticut but it's not that far. We went to RI a few years ago and took day trips to the cape and Mystic.

Actually Mystic Seaport is not too far from the RI state line....all depends where in RI you are headed.

We'll be staying in Warwick (just south of Providence). We have lots of relatives there, and the trick will be to make all the social events, plus do a lot of photography. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to accidently omit something noteworthy. We have four days to do a Rehearsal dinner, Wedding, Reception, and two picnics/clambakes. I know the agenda sounds ambitious, but I can't stand hanging around motels.

If you're in Warwick, then you will be able to make day trips to Cape Code and Mystic Seaport. Warwick is where we stayed when we were there. If you drive from Warwick to Mystic, you'll go through Naragansett. Also, while you are in Warwick, make sure you eat at "Legal Seafood" and "Cherystones". The seafood is excelent.

We will be going to spend a weekend in Middletown/Newport RI in three weeks or so, so this is very timely.

Also looking forward to ideas on how to keep my wife busy so I can take some pictures... ;)

They are doing Waterfire tonight in Providence which is a pretty spectacular photo op if you like night/water/fire/cityscape/crowd scenes. I was just down by the river this afternoon shooting for the "Straight from the camera" challenge. They were setting up for the Waterfires. Rhode Island is pretty spectacular all around for photo ops. We are surrounded by water, history, beautiful architecture, art, great food, culture, diversity....you name it. You don't have to travel far. Definitely check out the tourist spots like Newport, but Warwick has plenty of quirky charm to offer if you seek out the coastal 'villages'. Of course, the oldest parade in the States takes place in Bristol on the Fourth...my daughter will be parading in a giant puppet head with the Big Nazo puppets.

Enjoy your stay!

I can get from here, on the "elbow" of the cape, to T.F. Greene Airport, which happens to be in Warwick, in under two hours unless I hit a rush hour. So, considering I'm halfway into the cape, I'd say 1 1/2 hours Warwick > Cape Cod is a reasonable goal. Then add on to that however long you need to get further INTO the Cape; obviously it takes a while to get from the canal to Provincetown :-)

I'm a reasonably safe driver and I can get to P.Town (the uppermost tip of the Cape) from Providence in about 3 hours.

Heck no! I used to travel from Warren to the Cape in one hour tops. Of course, I am not the actual 55 mile an hour person, but its really one straight stretch. Once you see the Bourne bridge, you just say ahhhhhh. :)

Provincetown is a very interesting place if you have the time to make it all the way out there. The photo opportunities there are great. Also, you will have to deal with two "Rotary's" on the trip to P-Town. There is also another nice lighthouse in Truro which is almost to P-Town. It is called the "Highland Light". We went to the top of it and took a bunch of pics from there. Here are some of the pictures that we took. Of course, the camera was only 2MP at the time so keep that in mind.

I can get to the Cape in an hour---if you are talking Onset---but I was talking about P.Town, the very tip of the Cape....there is no way you can get to P.Town from Warren in an hour...sorry,it just ain't happening. I drive 80-ish where it is feasable and it takes 3 hours. I get to NYC in about the same time---maybe add a half-hour.

BTW, there is no need to drive all the way to the Cape when there are so many gorgeous sites in RI. Try Blithewold or Roger Williams Park Zoowhere they have gorgeous gardens. There is also Sakonnet Vineyards.. There is also The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology which is on a beautiful coastal location. You can learn about the local Native American population. Anyway, if you are going to visit Rhode Island, I say visit Rhode Island. If you are here long enough, of course you should visit the Cape. Just don't ignore the beauty that is right under your nose.

I'm a Providence native - transplanted to Florida. If you get to Prov. go to Benefit St, Brown & RISD area. Beautiful architecture from the late 18th cent. Additionally, there are lots, lots, lots of hills for iteresting vantage points. Could try "Prospect Park" (could be known as something different) - on Prospect St - big statue of Roger Williams - and overlooks downtown, state capital building. Lastly, you could visit Federal Hill, (in)famous Italian district in Prov - more interesting homes, buildings, views.

I'll second Blithewold, cause by brother was married there. Really nice!
