Wow, I'm noticing that a GOOD percentage of people on here are actually in technical professions... Likewise, I am a system administrator looking to move into computer forensics and just use photography as my creative outlet. Maybe that's the common case here. :) After spending all day in front of a computer, all you really want to do in your time away is to use the right-hand side of your brain. ;) I WAS a bit dumbfounded by the number of posts in the Linux distro and Firefox threads... :D

I've never sold a photo though I hope, some day, to. The only recognition I've gotten is a bunch of ribbons in the local fall fair, two Jones Soda labels, and one product shot for a friend's business card.
My studio consists of on-hand fabric draped over a garment rack behind a "workmate" and various assorted random lamps and flashlights. I own a P&S and a Walmart-quality tripod and camera bag.
You'll find ALL levels of talent, experience and equipment here which, combined with the willingness to share, is what makes this site special.

That's one definition.

Another one that I have come across is someone who receives any income from photography OR receives income from teaching photography.

Another common one I see is anyone who makes 51% or more of their income from photography.

The problem I have with income is that if someone makes 100,000 a year in a job, and they earn an additional 49,000 in photography, they're not considered a professional? Whereas if person B has a part-time minimum wage job making 7200 a year, but makes an additional 4000 in photography, they are?

Maybe it is just an attitude thing. :)

I am middle management for a fortune 500 company (read boring job). I love photography but am not a professional. my hopes are that I can make enough money some day to buy new toys, and that some people will like my work. I hope to someday make enough money in my real job to fund my wife (Jaded_youth) so that she may be a professional photographer. who knows maybe she will make enough money so that I can do it too:)

Hi all,

I can't help it... I have to put my 2 cents worth...

I am not a professional photographer, but in my mind, my heart in my soul, I am....

I think photography all the time... I do lots of assigments.... peoples like my work and my publicity is word of mouth....

I don't have a studio but I have everything to have one... I say that I have a mobilbe studio... I like to take pictures of everything that I find beautiful....

The best school and teacher for me is the comments on the photos that at present almost everyweek....

I like a picture that looks like a picture... sometime I find that some pictures proposed on the challenge are so manipulated that they don't look natural....

Anyway... I love and enjoy doing photography... to me this is the main thing....

I'm a writer. Trained as a film-maker.

The cross-over from motion picture to stills is pretty easy. The principles are the same in terms of exposure, film speed, etc.

Digital has made it easier (and cheaper) for me to explore still photography as a hobby.

hmmm - I am a professional photographer - but of a different sort. You see, I take radiographs for a living. My filters are made out of lead, and my 'big lights' are tungsten filamented xray tubes.

as a hobby, I shoot things with a digital camera, but no fancy lights

Damn Xray technicians always have to show off. When are you moving to Alaska? Do they have/need Xray techs in AK?

I said I was considering moving to AK - in 3-4 years. However, they dont get nearly enough snow, so I may have to re-think this.

I am here b/c I like taking photos, I like looking at them, people say they like mine, and everyone else likes someone else's....so, I guess I'm here to make me and others happy :)

But really I'm just bored as hell.

On vacation in Barcelona last week a couple asked me to take a pic of them because I LOOKED professional - that's good enough for me. LOL!!!

Another IT type here. Yes we are so boring it's not funny. But, it finances the photography habit. I went pro in a different hobby before and I wasn't as passionate about it after that. So, if I get better at photography I will avoid trying to make a living out of it. Personally I like to choose to take pictures instead of having to take pictures and promoting yourself takes away from click click time so I love how I do it right now. On the other hand I'd love to travel around and take really good nature shots and put them in a book, I wouldn't have to make money out of it, but it would be nice if someone bought it.
