I am professional photgrapher because I earn my living with it. I wake up in the morning with thoughts about my job and go to bed with it. If one owns big lights and cams, he is not a pro, even the one who just earns a bit on the side is not a pro.... the complete income counts...this is what we call a pro here in Europe.

No, I'm a photographer hobbyist. I have no flash other than the built in flash. I have no professional lights or reflectors. I have some home made lighting and a home made light box. I am currently working on a home studio room as $$ permit; then I may invest in lighting.

I'm a chemist and ISO Coordinator (manage the quality system) and photography is a hobby.

I have no special lights or equipment and use what I have on hand to create my shots. I would love to have some great lighting, better camera, etc., but what I have now forces me to be creative and I'm learning a lot. I have a bunch of 13" fluorescent lamps from a mini-greenhouse that I can put anywhere for different lighting. For soft light I toss a paper towel on them and it works quite well. If they ever have a 15 point light source challenge I'm covered!

Half of life is showing up/
more importantly, is the passion that you bring.
Are we our "professions" or our hobbies, or can we be pigeon-holed like that that?

Was Wallace Stevens a poet or an insurance exceutive? Is Ted Kooser a poet or an insurance actuary?

Am I a lawyer, a rock musician, a photographer, artist?

what defines a person as professional, money they make doing something? Is the person taking pictures of kids for olin mills or walmart a professional photographer? Is a person who takes yearbook photos a professional photographer? Van Gogh didn't sell any paintings, was poor and scorned while living, was he a professional?

The equipment, the money, thats all worthless, the passion defines you.

everyone is a photographer, the difference is most people only use their eyes.

I have never made a dime on my photos...luckily I have a day job.

I'm just a widdle grrl with a shiny box and an intimidating yet mildly impressive (in an average kind way) telephoto lens.

I was actually told that once, but in a more serious and unfun kinda way. :P

I am a photography hobbiest. But because I own and operate a video business I do have a few Lowel Light Kits laying around to play with. I also have 2 SB-600's with 2 Su-4's But I have been having problems figuring out how to aim them. I usually end up flooding the photo with light or I have them set somehow that they do not flash at all. For the most part it is just my camera and whatever lens i have on it at the time. maybe a CP Filter.

However my most recent entry I did a little studio style.

I´m a software developer, using big lights and filters!
Using some DIY things but like the pros.

I'm a high school student. With no summer job. And some money.
An aspiring photographer with a camera that impresses naive kids in school ;)

I've made 50 cents off my photos so far...does that make me pro? lol.

Just kidding. I'm a kid who loves wandering around with a P & S while dreaming of taking photos for the rest of my life.

I'm a professional photographer, but I don't use big lights or fancy equipment.

Let's clarify professional, though. A professional is someone that makes a majority of thier income from photography. It most often doesn't mean they are better than an amateur.

I just like taking pictures and trying to get better at it. My day job? I meet. Yes, I go to meetings. All day, every day.
