I was looking through the threads and the site for the mentorship threads but couldn't find anything that was specifically devoted to mentorship meaning I had to dig through each thread for links to mentorships provided. Am I missing something? Is there a specific link to the mentorships or do I just need to keep digging? Thanks in advance.

Finding a mentor at DPC is the absolute best way to improve your photography. Forget all the BS about comments and average scores and meeting the challenge, etc. If you are new to photography and can find an experienced photographer to discuss and comment on your images and submissions with you then you will learn much faster.

There is no mentorship program, but there should be.

What a fantastic idea. I would absolutely jump at such an opportunity.

Is there a possibility for making a mentorship thread on the forums? I am sure there are some (read - incredibly talented, photographically superior beings) that are willing to take us (read - color blind, uneducated, photographically challenged) individuals under their wing? I have seen mentorships being talked about on the forums but I am like you tmhalling and have no idea where they are and every time I come across one, they are full already. :( Any ideas from those who were successful at joining a mentor group?

Me too, it would be a great idea to have a mentorship group just like the critique club works. People sign up in either the mentor or mentoree(?) sections and get paired up with someone. It could definitely be done.

At one time there were several mentorships going. They were always posted in the "out and about" section.

Hang on a sec and I'll see what I can dig up.

I think i'd be interested.
As someone to be mentored, obivously, not the mentor.

Mentorships were organized by aboutimage a while back. He did have a link to all of the mentorships in his profile, but they seem to be missing.

Still working on it.

Here... try this.

I think the biggest problem with the personal mentor idea is that there are bunches and bunches of photographers on this site who feel they need / want a mentor and only a few photographers who actually feel they know enough to be a mentor. I have tried mentoring for a couple of photographers, but feel I'm not doing them justice with much of my limited knowledge.

A number of us have lobbied to have a new forum section devoted to mentoring on various topics. I believe it's in Langdon's "to-do" queue. There is one semi-current mentorship thread of considerable length running: it is called the Landscape Learning Thread and all are welcome to participate.

I have volunteered before to do one-on-one mentorship to specific individuals, but none of that ever actually happened in any structured way. I am open to "applications" for this process.

May I? Send me an application and I'll gladly fill it out. (please no random drug testing though). :-)

i am not a pro just a hobbyist but I'm willing to participate in a "mentorship program" as well. Taking a photograph is one thing. Post processing is another. I can help on either one. IMHO this is how new comers might learn as I did from all the talent on this site. 1 year on this site and my $25 membership has gone a looooooooong way ;)

just send me a PM or an email ;)

cheers,

rikki

ETA: Like Bear, I am "open to applications" :) With the vast knowledge that we have on this site, certain individuals can help with different facets of photography from shooting tips, to post processing, and even the business of photography ;)

This is great. Thanks for leading the way Palmetto. In Forums/Photography/Out and About, type in DPC Mentorship. You'll get all those search results, as you would in google. I just looked at one and in 5 minutes was overwhelmed with how much there is to learn.

Bear Music, your Landscape Learning thread is the reason I joined DPC. Thanks. I'll be the first of many to submit my application.

There are certain things that some are good at, but others aren't so good at. For example, Bear's landscapes are amazing. I very much envy his ability to not only take stunning landscapes, but edit them to look even more stunning in the end. On the other side, Cindi's portraits are amazing. The lighting is set up perfectly to get excellent portraits. I don't know how many people would think this is fair or whatever, but even having a mentor look over your challenge submission and give ideas on what to improve with editing or even a reshoot would do wonders for many people's (read: my) photography skills. I am not so much into portraits right now because of limited equipment and models (the girlfriend won't do it for whatever reason), but if I had to pick a mentor for portraiture Cindi would be one of the people I would want as a mentor. But for now, I will have to stick with the landscapes, and whatever else I can manage to put together.

Edit to add: I would love to "submit" applications to both Bear and Rikki. You both have amazing skills and I would love to learn some of it from you.

Aweee. Thanks, Sam. I'm flattered that you like my portraits. :D Now tell that girlfriend of yours to get you some studio lights and such for 4th of July and get ready to model for ya! :P

Hey, Rikki? How much you think we should charge for this? A standardized fee structure might be a good idea, eh? Or should it be tailored to the individual? In other words, can we make allowances to have Leroy pay with cheese if he wants to tap in, whereas Bill Gates would have to pay cash, and lots of it?

jejeje™

Seriously, folks: if you want to work with me, make an application (here or via PM) that covers WHAT you want help with, WHY you think I'm your guy, HOW you'd like to see it structured, WHEN you'd like to do it (scheduling), and WHERE you'd like it to take place (e-mail, a dedicated-but-public thread, in person on Cape Cod, whatever). We can work it out. I can't promise to "accept" everyone because I have no idea the number of responses that might be forthcoming, but we can take a look at possibilities.

Another, publicly-visible but limited participation group thread is also possible... As is another free-for-all...

I will also throw my limited knowlege into the mix. Anyone who wishes to PM me with studio/portrait type questions, please feel free. I am always willing to help if I can.

Ha, I wish. Every time I try and take a picture of her it ends up as either a shot of her hand in front of the lens or her back. My camera has no way to trigger studio lights anyway, so they will have to wait till I get an SLR.

Wow, I was wondering about this myself a few weeks ago. It'd be great to have someone who can help in areas where one is lacking (for want of a better word). My mentor would take me to common places, like the streets of the city or the beach, or a public park, and show me uncommon views, or different ways of composition. I'd like to follow another photographer's path of creativity.

I would like to see a portrait lighting thread started up. I am moving towards doing more portraiture but would like to focus on maternity and newborn photography. I realize to run a business I need to pay bills so I may end up doing family portraiture as a way to make ends meet when I go public with my photography business. I plan on ordering some strobes in the next few months. I couldn't actively participate in a portraiture lighting mentorship at this point (due to lack of equipment), but I would like to see one started where I could be a creepy lurker in a dark corner.

Consider it added to my "to do" list, Lee. I will begin gathering some starter info and start a thread when I have it pulled together. Perhaps we could get Manny, Kiwiness, and others involved too as they have excellent styles and may be able to offer knowledge that I don't have.

The thing with me is that I don't go out and shoot regularly during the school year because I simply don't have the time for it anymore. During the summer, I can get out and do a lot more. So I'm not necessarily looking for a regular person to help me out with things, just when I need help. I know that kind of sounds selfish, but I just can't do that much during the school year (junior year of engineering school...yay...). That and I don't have a car at school to go places that are out of the city either.
