Hi. I'm pretty new to photography, but would love to do more macro shots. They just seem to be out of focus some now. Would you know what kind of lens would be a good starter one for me?

I'm 61, and feel like I'm in first grade again. :)

Try to check out the Olympus web site. They have pretty good descriptions of lenses they make for Olympus cameras. I bought the wide angle conversion lens from Olympus, and I am quite happy with it.

I have the same camera, and the same problem. There are a lot of things I like about this camera, but its focusing algorithm often drives me crazy! I usually take three or four shots, refocusing each time, hoping one will work. Some hints:

1. Make sure the zoom is set all the way to wide angle for really close shots.

2. Avoid getting too close. No closer than four or five inches.

3. When it just doesn't focus, try rotating the camera and holding the shutter button half-way to focus, then rotate it back before taking the picture (or just take it vertical if the composition works, which it often does for macro shots).

4. Point the target marks at the highest contrast area at the focal distance you can find, preferably with vertical lines. The camera focuses by moving the lens in and out until the contrast is maximized.

5. When conditions allow, try getting further away from the subject and zooming in.

6. Motion blur can be a problem for macro shots. Use a tripod whenever possible.

Thanks for your replies. Rick, I'll try your hints. It seems when I first had the camera, and was doing a lot of practicing, point and shoot, auto.....macros were clearer. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. I've learned just enough to mess things up.

I did look at the Olympus site for accessories but thought you might have some ideas too. I can't afford everything they suggest.

dr rick, Glad I read this thread. I couldn't understand why sometimes my macros were great and other times very less than good. Thanks for responding.

Silent Sister, Thanks for asking.

Looks like you'll want this lens adapter:

//focuscamera.com/sc/main_item.asp?id=964586582&lhalf=allacc

It looks like it's a 55mm adapter. Check the following link for a great list of filters and lenses:

//www.wolfcamera.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/HelpView?storeId=10101&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&contentId=filterDemo#void

Hope I've helped.
