People keep leaving comments saying they don't believe my image meets the challenge well enough because the water in my long exposure is "too blurred"

When will people START reading the challenge description and STOP making comments that go against it. Motion blur DOES NOT have to create a feeling of movement! Motion blur is simply that, MOTION BLUR.

Long exposure is motion blur...how can you say that the water is "too blurred" and that it doesn't fit the challenge. Please people, if you don't fully understand what you are saying in your comments, please just vote how you want to vote and refrain from showing your ignorance.

By the way, apparently only the low voters are leaving comments because my image is still averaging a 6. Not that I'm happy with a 6, its favorable, but I still believe it is underrated thus far.

Last I checked people were allowed to voice their opinions - yes?

Excuse me, I must go now and make some "ignorant" comments. :)

honestly, I think it is threads like these which, while identifying an issue, are caustically worded, and keep folks from commenting. Its a sad decline in the site that I wish we could reverse, but folks seem intent on being angry instead of tolerant and openminded to alternative opinions.

well there are many people that feel they have gotten bad votes in motion blur. from your profile, you have not voted in anything that has finished yet. I sure hope that you are voting in this challenge and making up for the votes you are complaing about:)

Sorry but I decided to vote everything with long exposed water a 3. All it tells me is that there is a lack of imagination and originality... :)
Stay cool.

That sounds vaguely familiar. ;^)

Frankly, I'm more in alignment with the voters the OP mentions than with his take on their opinion; since the challenge is "motion blur" I want to SEE a sense of motion, and shots that smooth out the water to a silky surface don't convey that very well to me.

I definitely agree with Frisca's sentiments; these caustic threads lambasting voters who don't agree with the poster's take on the challenge are starting to wear me down a bit.

Robt.

I know a few people, including Beetle, have been big proponents of having a checkbox where people can mark whether they are or aren't interested in getting comments. I'd personally like to add a twist to that. When you complain in the forums about comments you've received, I'd like that to somehow be designated so that people don't waste their time giving you any sort of comments. There are plenty of people who are gracious recipients of any comment and they are the ones who should be rewarded by receiving them.

I read this quote some where, and thought it what cool...

"Just deal with what you get...an average is just that, an average."

My score is around 4.1 and I have received two very polite but negative comments and I am very happy about it. Just what I expected! :)

As a n00b photographer, I'm thrilled to get useful comments. Even if it came with a low score, sometimes it'll include what they felt was bad about my picture, and what I could have done to improve the shot.

Good thing I didn't enter my shot of a flower surrounded by moving water at sunset! ;-)

Suggested addition to the official site voting guidlines...
-----------------------------------------------------------
Proper Complaint Etiquette
1-Publicly complain about your low score
2-Complain you don't get comments explaining why
3-Complain about the comments you do get explaining why
4-Repeat from step 1

Note: Failure to comply with this guidline completely and in the proper sequence could be grounds for DQ by site council.

I adore comments. I'll take any comment you got. I think there should be a "comments slut" checkbox.

Where is that "don't be a dick thread"?

quick... tell me which photo is yours so i can go leave the really negative and hurtful comment that it must truely deserve...

;}

maybe there does need to be an extra check box, so that, during voting, you can mark if you think the photo is a dnmc, yet vote on the photo's merits alone. then the final calculations could take into account the percentage of people who didn't think you met the challenge and deduct points (off some sliding scale, of course...)

nah... to complicated... just deal w/ your average...

as for the comments i recieved so far, i'd like to suggest that when slippy uses words i don't understand, that he have to hyperlink to a wikipedia definition... i think it meant he liked it, though...

Your failed attempt at trying to be intelligent is laughable. I'm not complaining about my score, I'm complaining about the uniformed commenters. NEXT.

I'm sorry that [you] can't figure out the difference between using one subject in every challenge vs. using a subject that is used often, BUT FITS THE CHALLENGE PERFECTLY.

Motion Blur, bokeh, animals, glass, nudes, etc. etc. etc. - whatever the freakin challenge there is always some[one] that enters a picture of a flower...

Water makes for great motion blur pictures...flowers don't exist to be in every challenge...there is no comparison here.

specialk0783- if you cannot respond in a way that does not attack specific users or users as a group, please refrain from posting in the forums. Its fine to disagree, its not fine to insult others, call them stupid or "deuches".

I agree that water can make for a great motion blur. I also agree that waterfalls and wine glasses and water droplets are overused. The trick is to take a shot which uses a classic subject and make it fresh. If we've seen it before, then it's just going to get an eye roll and a low score for lack of innovation.

That said, I still don't understand why mine is running with a score under 5. I think it's mostly lack of context, which I didn't provide in the title since I didn't want to use the title as a crutch. Sixty two voters, be they bored or grumpy or picky, have thus far declined to so much as drop a hint as to why. I don't even have any of those puzzlingly positive comments that tend to pop up on low scoring photos seemingly for the sole purpose of driving me insane...

I'm going to try to comment on every photo in this challenge. Anyone want to join me? To everyone who's complaining about a lack of comments, I say, "And why doesn't my entry have a comment from you?"
