I'd think, you'd be safe to toss any original a week or so post challenge close. To be 100% safe, you should keep the original of any image you ever submitted, IMO.

Given the cost of CD-R discs (about 0.1 cents/frame for my camera) I see no reason to ever "toss" an original image anymore (unless it has something incriminating on it, I guess).

The good, the bad, and the ugly, I save them all.

True enough with the cd idea, which is where they go from my comp, however, they do not save my exif data intact as does when it is still on my computer. (and no nothing incriminating--my shots are not that exciting-lol)

I save even boring shots, because they sometimes come in handy for a composite....
I have taken bits and pieces of photos that I would have normally gotten rid of and used them for some great composites!
You never know when you have a gem in he rough.

If you are just burning a data CD all of the file information should still be there!

I view original digital files the same way I view film. I wouldn't throw out negatives (or positives for that matter), so why wouldn't I keep the original images?

If anyone's looking for workflow ideas, here's what I do:

After a shoot or trip, I create a directory for the shoot/trip. I usually name it by date and description, such as "20030916 Whatever". That way they are stored chronologically.

Under the main directory, I create "Digital Original", "Scans", "Edited", and "Webready". Files from the digital camera go under "Digital Original", from the scanner go into "Scans". If it's going to be a while until I edit them, I may copy the files to a CD-RW or a DVD-RW just in case. I then copy everything from those two directories into "Edited". This helps make sure I don't accidentally change the original images.

I then work my way through the "Edited" folder. Sometimes I used ACDSee to print a "contact sheet", sometimes I look through it and delete images I don't like, and sometimes I just load them all into photoshop and close images I don't want to keep at the time.

When I'm editing my photos in photoshop, I save them as photoshop files. I have a macro in photoshop that reduces the image to 500 pix high, unsharp masks it, saves it as a jpeg in my Webready folder, and closes the image without changing the original. So, when I'm done editing the image, and have saved what I want in photoshop format, I just hit the F-key associated with the macro to create a web-sized image and close the file.

When I'm finished editing, I delete everything *except* the photoshop files in the "Edited" folder, and burn the whole thing to a CD-R or DVD-R. (With DVD-R's going for a few bucks each, it's a dirt cheap way to save up to 4.7 GB of data.)

Hope that gives you some ideas!
