Ok, so I did some practicing with some pictures that I've not gotten around to for ages...

Trying to see what I am doing wrong and what I am doing right... (don't forget to use F11 to view them as they are larger pics...

Check these two out...

and if you were wondering, She was having a tantrum against her brother because he was pinching her... No candy was taken... :)

To soften the mood somewhat and to show that it wasn't all bad...

About as popular as garlic and mustard ice cream...? :)

BUMP.

Well i for one would love to know exactly what you did and what steps you used for the first two as they effect is very strong and effective and one i'd love to learn.

All three are great shots.

All I did was ctrl-j for a second layer, ctrl-u for hue/sat, red channel, lightness to -100... Then I played with contrast on the layers and merged around 75% opacity... I also went to the color layer and pushed the saturation of the reds by 50-60%... Quite an interesting result from that... It kept the color in the face and especially the lips, but because the other layer was strongly pushing the reds into darkness, it balanced quite nicely.

I was quite impressed with the results as well...

I am curious to see if people think that the effect is strong enough nor not strong enough... I was worried that the 2nd one might look a bit "not-so-heavily-processed" and people might just think that I screwed it up.. :)

A final bump...

I really would like to have some more comments on these...

How do they make you feel?

Do they make you think of the processing or the emotion more?

Is the processing overdone? Underdone?

The saturation is low: is it too low? does it look purposeful or just washed out?

I do not know if I am qualified enough to comment and that may be why a lot of people haven't responded but just from a "photography fan" point of view - the first one looks a little staged although the colors are deep and powerful and I love the effect of that. The second one does not really do much for me. I do not know if it is the subjects pose or the brightness on certain parts of the face - there is something that just does not "grab" me with that one. The last one on the other hand, is wonderful IMO. You captured her in a shot where she does not appear to be posing, she looks really focus on the bubble wand and the softness really does work well here. The bokeh background really helps to draw your focus to the girl as well. Composition works well too! I hope this helps!

Left you a couple of comments. Nice work.

to my ignorant but sensitive eyes, you got all 3 right. they all convey a mood very strongly and seem naturalistic. and your model is beautiful.

I think they all look great and are very emotive, which I find appealing. Picture 2 might have been a little better zoomed out a little more or with a little less crop. The face takes up a litle too much of the total image for my tastes. Also whatever is in the background is visible, but not recognizable. That drives some people crazy. The third image would have been better captured from a little more to the front. Just enought to make more of her face visible. Other than that the photo is excellent. As for the first image, I really can't see anything to comment on. It was simply well done. A beautifully captured photo.

Of course these are just my opinions.

Thanks guys... it's encouraging to hear that I am doing at least a couple of things right..

The background in the 2nd one is a bit distracting, and I felt that it distracted a bit too much from the overall pic... I might redo with a larger crop... I might add that the pic is a crop from a rather unplanned and unprepared shot that has nearly the whole body included... In other words, it's a very heavy crop... Gotta love what is there even still... I don't know how it will look if blown up, but I'd guess that I can still get a fairly decent 8x10 out of it if I try...

I've been having a lot of trouble lately second guessing myself in my Post Processing, especially in the areas of contrast, color and compositions.
