Just a quick question.

Does "Bokeh" mean "Flower" in French?

06/21/2006 11:24:57 PM · #2
p.s.

where do I see my scores?

If I go to the challenge page and click my image...does that show me the scores? If so, I don't have any yet.

Go to My Home/My Preferences and tick the box that says show scores.

They'll then show on the home page.

Thanks...

91 votes so far, average is 5.1

I feel that is very underated so far, hopefully it goes up. I figure I'm only up against 150 or so pictures, since 251 of them are flowers and if a flower wins I think I'm going to have to quit DPC.

Don't worry, my shot isn't a flower...

There's at least one that probably has a chance (not mine of course).

Mine is no flower. But then I'm riding a pretty weak 4.3 with just over 100 votes. Technically I meet the challengevery well. But apparently it's not very interesting.
Oh well. I didn't even know what the word meant - and I'm still not sure what the point is supposed to be.

(That could explain my 4.3....)

There is nothing dead in my shot this week. I think I need to have that as a disclaimer in my signature...

However, I am not a barbarian. I do not mercilessly uproot living organisms or cut off their most prized part and arrange them in glass vases with pretty backlighting. How dare you, sir!

PS: I know you are just jealous. You fully realize that had you found a dead cockroach and glued it to your Tulip Trio it would have easily made a 7+ instead of a paltry 6.995...

I don't think I can take another flower. I was going to vote for 75% of the photos here, but I can't take another flower.

This is driving me nuts.

You know....After being here for over 4 years and voting over 18,000 times I still do not get tired of any shot...done well.

I think people who disparage on a particular type of photography usually have not teken the time to study photography.

Some of the greatest photographers of all time are known for their studies of simple subjects.

Yes I entered a flower (sort of) in this challenge and yeah...I kinda get testy when other people sublimly campaign against types of photography othere find joy in although my portfolio shows I shoot all kinds of stuff.

I totally agree. I took quite a few pictures, but nothing "stood out", except my flower one. I don't normally enter in challenges, this is actually my 2nd one. My first one, I really should have done better (who the hell would know my photograph would be a bunch of whiskers that I collected?). I have taken several bokeh pictures WITHOUT flowers, but it didn't really stand out for me. I entered my flower, boom, there was over 50% others with flowers. All I can say is, WHOA. Very few I felt really made the brokeh challege, and a quite a lot others just plain dof, simple as that.
I felt like my flower stood out from the others that were entered. I was NOT aiming for a ribbon, just recongization.
I would say almost ALL the challenges the ribbon winners had DSLRs, and I don't own one. I just take the pictures the best I could with my A620 Powershot.
More and more people are entering challenges, and you'll see more than "one subject" from time to time. It's up to you guys to suck it up and vote for what you FEEL that did well on meeting the challenges, not because "it's another flower".
I did well at the beginning of the voting, but my score went down big time, and I felt like the people who said, "*groan* Not ANOTHER FLOWER!" and gave me a lower score. That's simply not fair.

Sorry for rambling...haven't had my tea yet. :-D

Totally agree with Deanna and Scott.

I confess, mine's one of the dreaded flowers. I like it for the shapes and colours, not because its a flower. :oP

Bokeh is supposed to make your subject jump out of the image. Kind of like this. (At least this is my interpretation.)

funny you should use that pic, mine is similare in that it is the same use of Bokeh and I am being told it does not meet challenge or that it is not Bokeh go figure even when you follow the topic those who do not understand what they are voting for put you down.

When I think of depth of field I think more of a gradual transition from the thing in focus to the thing out of focus. Bokeh the entire main subject is supposed to be in focus and then the whole background is out of focus. I'm not an expert, so if that's not true, could someone clarify it for me.

Not my words but I think they suffice....

..."Ideal bokeh would render each of these points (of out out of focus light) as blurs, not hard-edged circles. Mathematicians would say the intensity distribution of the blur circles are rectangular in perfect lenses, and good bokeh would prefer a Gaussian distribution. This is one area in which physics doesn't mirror what we want artistically.

Differing amounts of spherical aberration alter how lenses render out-of-focus points of light, and thus their bokeh. The word "bokeh" comes from the Japanese word "boke" (pronounced bo-keh) which literally means fuzziness or dizziness.".....

Great Bokeh is definitely affected by your lens. But by being smart and thinking about your out fo focus elements you can get great Bokeh.

Having diffuse points of light and colors in the back ground and even forground can help get silky smooth Bokeh.

There are always a few that aren't "in line" with everyone else that is voting. They have their idea about what the challenge means and sometimes that is just not a mainstream view of the challenge.

Also, in this challenge, you have to have some serious blur to the background objects. I have seen a few similar images to my sample that do not feature quite as strong a background blur.

Well that all helps just trying to get a handle on what everyone is looking for and what I am trying to do.

Aaaah, now I see the light. Probably why my score has dropped big time (am a flower entrant). Well here's to all flower entrants - chin up and don't let it get you down! From another proud flower entrant ;) Feels like a Flower photographers anonymous club or something LOL!
