.. of bokeh, what do you think?

I agree with you I think. The first few entries I looked at and went "whahhh?" Right now I am checking out the new challenges and want to see the other placements in the ones just ending, but wow, I think a lot of people certainly have their own take on bokeh for sure.

Yea, and that means that those people who entered the not-so-bokeh images are also voting to make their image entry count, therefore throwing the scores out of wack. Meaning a person who really hit bokeh on the head might not get as high as an image who someone that entered a pretty/crisp image with just small dof/blurry background.

Exactly the reason I chose 30 Seconds. I wish you guys luck, but IMO this will be a low scoring challenge.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing and now a little nervous. I thought mine was really good for bokeh, but after seeing the really awsome ones and knowing what the so-so's are going to do I'm not staying hopeful for mine.

Well I went through quite a lot already and don't see that. But couldn't this thread hurt the entries that are in there?

I knew that was going to happen. I didn't enter, because nobody in the forum could really agree on what it ment. It really is a depth of field challenge from the ones I have seen so far.
06/21/2006 12:48:18 AM · #8
P&S's who couldn't enter in 30sec could have been doing their best with their equipment...

I sorta agree there's a bunch of chaff there, but I saw a dozen contenders by thumb at least. Both with and without circles of light.

We are bokeh poor in this challenge. Some very nice photos, but most look like plain 'ol DOF to me. I rejoice when I come across actual bokeh, but they are few and far between. The one's that DO have bokeh are very good, tho!

I'm thinking that a lot of those entries are by people that don't frequent the forums that won't see this anyways.

Not hurt that. It may sway the voters. IMO

So far I've only seen ones with good bokeh and some with bad bokeh but I haven't come across one that didn't have bokeh at all. Now I haven't looked at each one yet but I have looked at a few pages worth of images. If it has blur in it then there's bokeh plain and simple. The circles of confusion (a.k.a. bokeh) is the only way blur is accomplished in camera so the circles are always there whether you see them or not. The only question is how good or bad it is and how well or how poorly it enhances the subject.

I'm with Yanko and Wazz, I think there's a LOT of people who did know what bokeh is in there, just from the thumbs. anyways, my shot sux, I have no idea why I entered it.

Yep, based on a quick peak at all the entries, at least 350 do know what it is.

Well, I respectfull disagree. Good bokeh to me are when the out of focus areas of the picture are pleasantly rendered without harsh edges. And IMO it has very little to do with circular rendering of background lights.
In this challenge the oof areas should enhance the shot. I agree with someone who said very few shots does that.

I agree, good bokeh should have soft edges in the OOF areas but that's good bokeh. Bad bokeh has harder edges but it's still bokeh and that's the only point I've been making here. In other words, bad bokeh shouldn't get a DNMC vote just a poor technicals vote. Same thing for the bokeh not enhancing the subject. Like with every challenge we'll see the good, the bad and the ugly.

BOKEH AND DEPTH OF FIELD ARE THE SAME THING!!!

Geez...there is no difference between Bokeh and a blurry background known as "depth of field" - Bokeh is just a Japanese word that describes the blurry background we Americans call "DOF"

Now get off it already...Bokeh is Bokeh, Depth of Field is Bokeh, Bokeh is Depth of Field, DOF is DOF, DOF is Bokeh, Bokeh is DOF...NOW STOP ARGUING!

Why would anyone do that?! That's just playground pettiness, and very silly.

I certainly hope these are not adults that you're speaking of! :(

No, I disagree. It is my understanding that it is much more than that. Blurred background DOF, or circles of light, bokeh must be an integral and pleasing part of the whole, enhancing the subject to a degree that goes artistically beyond just a shallow DOF.

Hmmmm, it's hard to explain, like Zen.

Your igorance is showing.
//www.digitalartform.com/lenses.htm
and the images in I refer to (since there is a lot on that page)

DOF is depth of field, the area that is in focus. Bokeh is the quality of the OOF area. Not the same thing.

Calendar wise they may qualify as adults, but if measure it by behavior...
