Hay Y’all,

I am very curious. That’s why I want to start this discussion. So it is not because I am bitter because received a 5.4. And excuse me if I made mistakes in my English. Sorry I’m a Dutch Muts *lol*

It’s all about this picture

Some of you are screaming its old, get a new idea. (this idea is so old. Get a new one. its not interesting anymore.) So I browsed a bit in the DP archives and only found 4 pictures with the same idea:
Ok the original is’nt it?

and

If there are more please tell me.

When something is done 4 times is it really an old Idea?
Well how about the “drops on a piece of glass and something beneath it” pictures. This is what I found:

So that must be worn out! And it is still winning ribbons. Hey I don’t mind, it’s a nice idea and you can learn a lot of making your own version of a picture. And ehm almost everything has been done in photography isn’t it…. And yes sometimes you’ll see an original idea…
There are sooooooo many pictures of flowers, yes it’s been done a kaaazilijon times. But still it can be very beautiful. And you can learn so much from making the same kind of pictures you have seen. So wha’s the point? Making an original picture or making a picture you like to watch?

I made my picture “High Five for Arní” because I love his pictures and idea’s. I wanted to give him a high five for all his brilliant work.
Yes I gave it a twist. Not a portrait but a hand. So fill me in; why the hard comments and why a 1? If it’s because it is not original, then lots and lots of pictures will get much more 1’s. Sometimes I give a 5 because it has been done and it isn’t a super pic But still I also look at the used light, and techniques.
Hmmm, maybe there’s not only an DNMC-maffia, but also a NOE-maffia (not original enough) Well I wish them good luck, they’ve got a lot to do!!! :)

I don't know if there are more, but all but one were entered within the last three months. Sure, it's a nice idea, but it's been seen A LOT recently. I am also weary of water droplets. I do think your entry had a unique spin on it. I absolutely agree with you that this is far better than 5.4. You produced a strong image with an interesting twist that met the challenge well. Some, well most days, it is hard to figure out the voters. Don't let it get to you too much. There have been several challenges that I finish all pissed off, but then I keep entering anyway.

Left a detailed comment on your image. Personally, I never worry about plagiarism :-)

I gave you a 10. I did not feel this was old idea as i see many images that really great but have been repeated so often, specially the wine glass with two different bg paper.

To reproduce those shot is not easy but people who do so donot do justice their talent by doing something that has been done do many times,

Just remembered the motto of (I think) the Rotary Club here in the UK:

"Adopt, Adapt, Improve".

Seems fitting, somehow.

@ Eric: Great critique! hihi And I'm not pissed of, just very curiuos. Hé I like the picture so... Of course it is great when everybody likes it. But you can't have iat all. I was a bit stunned that it was called old idea, while there where only four. But your right, maybe 4 in 3 months s too much. Should have waited..

@obsidian: Wow that's a nice way to "judge" picture! Thnx a lot to take the time for "the high five"! And the moto, i couldn't agree more!!

@General: Yes I saw it, and I'm very happy with that score ;) and also with your comment after the challenge! That was very sweet! xxx!

The people complaining about this being an old idea must be having a hell of a time voting on the Green II Challenge.

Saw this and immediately thought it was applicable:

For me I don't think the idea is old at all yet - especially compared to the water droplets shots. However, I think the background needs some flash and maybe some color because it is so flat looking. Just my 2 cents.

What Kaups said. For anyone who hasn't seen the predecessors, it's just an odd image of a hand wrapped in paper. For anyone familiar with the predecessors, your image lacks the vivid color and background highlight that made the others special. Either way, your score takes a hit. You'd have a hard time getting that highlight with a single light source, so IMO it probably wasn't a suitable concept for this particular challenge.

hey check this out then, this image just won this person $20 000 in a major photography prize here in australia.. just goes to show it doens't matter how old the idea is, if it's a hit, then it's a hit.. and for $20 000 who cares....

i personally think it's a really interesting shot... makes me want to look at it longer than some other photos i come across...

Hmmm maybe you're right... This is the final version, With a light in the background(burned. I think it's much better... But no single light source....

I made the gray/white background, because I thought it would be much nicer with the hand.
Well maybe the picture wasn't right for the challenge.

@Obsidian Nice quote!!

@roadrunner. Wow 20 000!!!! Great. It's a great shot!
Thanx for the compliment!

What plagiarism? If photography is considered plagiarism when someone emulates anothers work, then alot of people better get lawyers.

All those water drop shots are not all of the same photographer. All those flower shots, all those Ansel Adams shots, all those black and white shots, all those nudes, all those sports shot....ect., ect..

The names are hidden during the challenge, then revealed afterwards. There is no secrecy to whom did what.

Majanka has a valid image, a very good one at that, and was only emulating someones elses ideas within a photographic frame.

She is totally correct. The image should stand on it's own, and not be ridiculed for being "done before".

For all those professional critiquers, get a clue.

With the possible caveat that the title made reference to the original image by Arnit.

Que? Sorry, mate, but I was not attacking Majanka at all, as you would have seen from the comments I left on her very good picture.

Sadly, though, I used entirely the wrong word when I said "plagiarism", intending it to be more of "sincerity as flattery" as opposed to use of someone else's material without acknowledging the source, which I strongly oppose.

So, an apology to all here for the use of the wrong - and very emotive - word when what I should have said was

Personally, I never worry about imitation

Since we are talking about how many time you can do somehting. I might vomit on my computer if I see another macro of a bug.

That is just my feelings, sorry to you if you are the one that likes bug pictures, I don't mean to offend. They just drive me nuts, and in greenery there were lots of dragon flies and I was getting tired of voting them.

That and pictures of leaves.

As for your image, I liked it. I don't feel like it stirs anything up in me. Great photography work on it. Technically great. I don't know that I was blown away by any of the others that were similar to be honest. Except the lense cap, because that was just funny.

don't worry, being unique doesnt win ribbons either...most of my entries i've entered on this site have gotten the "thats unique!" post and i never get past a 6, i think the fact that i got my camera in october has something to do with it though :)
06/16/2006 06:23:30 AM · #23
of course, my goal each time i enter is to improve each time and just be satisfied with that alone, I'm always trying to be different as well though thats my mottoa ;)

There is nothing wrong with trying to re-create an idea.
I read somewhere once: Every picture has been done before, but not yet by me!

I even won a ribbon with this photo:

And I was trying to copy this blue ribbon winner:

And that was inspired on this ribbon winner:

And that was inspired by the Afghan Girl by Stve McCurry....

It's all a part of learning....
