I'm starting to feel a little depressed by the challenges lately, first failure, then empty rooms, now desolation.... at least there shouldn't be much to argue about on this one.

I bet this one is going to have a whole lotta good shots in it....

It's a very open subject and fits the DPC taste very well, you know.

hmmm, to find desolation in lush green Washington or Oregon. That's gonna be a challenge...

Because it is inevitable, and it this case, probably helpful:

des·o·late adj.
1a. Devoid of inhabitants; deserted: “streets which were usually so thronged now grown desolate” (Daniel Defoe).
1b. Barren; lifeless: the rocky, desolate surface of the moon.
2. Rendered unfit for habitation or use: the desolate cities of war-torn Europe.
3. Dreary; dismal.
4. Bereft of friends or hope; sad and forlorn. See Synonyms at sad.

Thanks Bear, I can see it from the enterance to my neighborhood, but didn't quite think of it. I think it's got a good amount of snow though still...

He, he, I was thinking the same, but about British Columbia.

Johnston Ridge is open. Last I checked (a few weeks ago) Windy Ridge was closed due to snow.

I am sad already. Maybe the failure and empty rooms were to get us sad enough.

I think you're using a different language to me. Only the first of these has any connection, and then only it's environment.

From DrAchoo's post above... the definition of desolate includes:
4. Bereft of friends or hope; sad and forlorn. See Synonyms at sad.

Oh, I'm sure they fit with your understanding of the word - even perhaps/probably a wider use of it. I don't agree - I think it implies a far stronger emotion than that.

yeah, since it's so tough to show desolation to some voters, might as well do a bare landscape for this challenge XD

That's nice if you have one around, I live in a small country with 16 milion other people, there's no bare landscape left here LOL Mmmm....I might find me some nice desolated dune, but as it is full summer overhere, they probably will be overcrowded with tourists. On the other hand, I might find a desolated feeling person in a crowd too. Arghhh, tough one.

I looked in my inspiration box, it was empty, barren and lifeless.
...voila.....

A couple of links in this thread will help if you're looking for the old-empty-building type of desolation.

My thoughts exactly. Especially since I'm fairly tied to around my house, or between schools and soccer practices. Not a lot of desolation in our neighborhood. The schools will be empty at the end of the week, but I sincerely doubt many people feel desolate about that. Sigh. This one will take a bit of creative thinking for me. I can think of lots of great images... just not ones I can get around here.

Desolation can happen in the suburbs. :) One of my favorite images of all time...

Here is what I found desolation to mean straight from dictionary.com. I'm worried that Dr. Achoo's definition and the definition i have are different and may cause a problem if I decide to enter this challenge

desolation

n 1: the state of being decayed or destroyed [syn: devastation] 2: a bleak and desolate atmosphere [syn: bleakness] 3: sadness resulting from being forsaken or abandoned [syn: forlornness, loneliness] 4: an event that results in total destruction [syn: devastation]

I agree...I don't see any connection with the first image by jj (very little at best). He doesn't look sad to me....more contemplative.

The doggie kinda fits (Bereft of friends or hope; sad and forlorn)

Do I smell a ton of dnmc's en route???

Would a man selling postcards of the hanging get through?
