I am new to this site and just got my first DSLR a few weeks ago. What I'm finding very frustrating at the moment is resizing photos - I have a perfectly good looking image which ends up a poor version of its former self after resizing - what am I doing wrong?! I was quite pleased with the photo I took for this week's challenge until I got it resized enough to submit and it has lost so much....I don't even know whether it's worth submitting any more.

I am using Digital Photo Professional 2.1 - is this any good? What can I do differently?!

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

Are you trying to size up or down?

Size down...I have all my photos in Iphoto and most of them are somthing like 1700*2300 pixles.

There is a tutorial on preparing images for DPC among the many tutorials under the "learn" tab. It is phrased in Photoshop terms but the steps should be similar with other software. Any of the image editing programs ought to be able to do a reasonably good job of reducing the size of an image.

It is hard for us to give advice without a more specific description of what you are doing and how it came out. Please ask again with the details.

One general suggestion is to ignore everything about dpi (dots per inch) and ppi (pixels per inch). The only thing that matters on the web is the size in pixel. You should resize so that the largest side is 640 pixels.

Resize for DPC in Canons Digital Photo Professional v2.1.1.4:

Same steps for RAW and JPG

Work your photo up...

File > Convert and Save...
Image Quality = 7 (to keep the filesize under 150k)
Output Resolution = 72 dpi (all a monitor can display...prints would be differnt)
Check Resize Setting checkbox
Change the longest dimension to 640 (lock aspect ratio checked)
Click Save button

I don't normal work up and resize in DPP but just ran several test and they came out fine.

Wow - thanks so much Andy (awpollard) - I just had another go at resizing my image using your method and it has made the world of difference. What I was doing before was leaving the image quality at 10 (didn't even think about changing it!) and just altering the dimension - this resulted in a very poor image. Your method has produced an image which is small enough to submit for a challenge and yet doesn't look too far off the original in quality terms. I'm so grateful for your reply - thank you!

wheeledd - thanks for the link - I'm going to go off and read this now!
