I know this has been discussed in previous threads, but I have been away from my computer these last few days and wonder if Langdon or Drew have set the record straight on whether or not Rotate 90* is ok to adjust for portrait shots.

no. it shouldn't be allowed according to the rules.

Mavrik, thanks for your input but, so far, yours is the only opinion I have seen (from the previous threads). It makes no sense to me that this be disallowed. Why rule out all portrait format shots? It is not an EDIT as such. It does not make sense, so I would like to hear it from the ADMIN before I rule out my portrait shots.

Let me quote the admin:

"You are allowed to resize -- and that's final."

I'm willing to agree with Mavrik...the concept is to capture and post as is. I just changed out my entry because of this...hope you are right!

If you only want D & L's opinion - there's always the contact button. The forums also seem to be more for the general populace. :)

I'm not even sure if I want to submit my Portrait shot, but they ruled on the DSLR RAW issue (which BTW I think is wrong to allow it), I just thought it would be nice to hear from them on this as well. It might be a little late now, but anyway....

BTW what is the "contact" button? never mind, I found it

Turn the monitor on side (90 ") and should be ok :-)
08/20/2003 10:08:31 PM · #9
Some camera's can rotate the image in-camera, which is legal, so all portrait shots are not illegal. But anything done outside the cam with the sole exception of resize is out...

Least that's the way I read it...

When you download rotated in-cam pics, don't they come out as landscape anyways? Isn't that a viewing option, not a picture option?

No, I know the G3 at least downloads rotated photos.

Darn, the one photo I was thinking about entering is in portrait mode and when I upload the file, it needs to be rotated. Oh well, it wasn't a "wow" shot anyway.

If you can turn the camera to the side to take a picture, and you can turn a picture to the side to look at it I can't see how this would be considered editing at all. You're turning the picture, nothing more.

Maybe they are bad rules. But I don't see how they allow for anything else.

*shrug*

I plan to submit my photo in the same orientation as the light hit the image sensor as the camera was mounted on my tripod.

For all of you who are paranoid, submit your portrait-type photo in landscape format and hear the howls of "My neck hurts! Why didn't you rotate this?"

If enough people complain about that, maybe D&L will rotate all the entries for us as pennance for their lack of clarity.

And why is everyone always looking at every possible way to DQ or limit the interpretation of EVERY SINGLE CHALLENGE, instead of just looking at, enjoying, and evaluating the photos on their merits? What a colossal waste of time and creative energy. If I wanted an endless supply of this kind of debate, I'd go to law school or a seminary ....

For crying out loud, I'm not gonna deduct anything for a 90 degree turn! If that's how the photo was taken, then that's how it was taken.
08/20/2003 10:58:25 PM · #17
So if the shot was originally taken with that orientation, don't you think that should be legal?

I agree, that even though it's not specifically stated for this challenge, that rotation is ok. I don't make the rules, but I won't 'count off' for anything that is in portrait orientation. It's a bit silly to disallow rotation.

I think rotating to portrait is perfectly OK.

I almost did, and sometimes do, but prefer to spend my thinking and typing energy (if I can synchronize them) on more substantive issues ....

BTW: Do you do any entertainment (music) legal work?

I had a choice of two and submitted the one with landscape "just in case". It sure made it a lot quicker and easier to submit without having to worry about any post-processing and a border!!
08/20/2003 11:22:13 PM · #23
I want to do IP - copyright, trademark if I have a choice. :)

Back on topic - I shot my shot according to the rules as they are stated, not as I interpret them. Sure, you can "not take off" for x,y,z. And sure, SC may not agree with me if I go around DQing every rotated shot, but my question is why not? What is the argument for allowing rotation except "but we want it"? This is a case of either a) D&L fucked up or b) everyone is just complaining to complain or to fit their shot into the challenge when this week's Thurs challenge was obviously designed for them to work within constraints.

*sigh*

I don't know. I think I should unsubmit anyways. I shot a shot in landscape that deserves to be shot in portrait. It doesn't seem to be a difficult rule - the questions about it .... whatever.

I agree.

It's also a bit silly disallow all other editing as well.
But that's the challenge apparently. Rules is rules as people keep telling me.

For us non-colored shirt guys/gals. What are the official rules on the "Past" challenge that is making this one so difficult? Thanks.
