1. Define "Point and Shoot" camera.
2. Can it be used in Manual mode? Av? Tv? Etc.....

Per Wikepdia's results:

A point and shoot camera, also called a compact camera, is a still camera designed primarily for simple operation. They include a viewfinder for composition, but use autofocus or focus free lenses for focusing and automatic systems for exposure as well. They differ from other types of cameras, except disposables, in that they lack systems for focusing manually.

Point and shoots are by far the best selling type of camera. They are popular with people who don’t consider themselves photographers but want an easy to use camera for vacations, parties, reunions and other events.

Most point and shoots have flash units built in. Although flash can be hard to use, it’s the only convenient way to take pictures in most indoor settings. Many cameras have the flash set on top of a long arm, often doubling as a lens cover, to reduce red-eye effect.

Yes. Most P&S have these features built-in the camera but are very limited.

I understand that there are the higher end P&S cameras hence the Advanced Editing clause in the challenge.

Why?

I just bought a 1.3 MP clickcam with no zoom, autofocus, aperature, nor shutter speed adjustment. I *will* enter a challenge with it soon.

It also comes with a handy neckstrap for when you have too many rum punches on the beach and fall down on the second day you've owned it. Apparently sometimes this will cause the battery cover to fall off and you will subsequently lose it on said beach, and the battery falls out unless it has tape on it, but at least you still have your camera. It also seems the neckstrap is good for winging the camera around on your finger. Which evidently is not so good if the neckstrap breaks.

So yeah...I'm all for a P&S challenge :)

That leaves out a majority of the Canon compacts since they have manual focus capabilities. :P

Sooo, would my CoolPix 8700 EVF camera make this challenge?

What do you mean why? I think we've all heard the outcry before when the 2 second challenge came about. Most P&S users couldn't accurately get the correct 2 second exposure. Ironically, the winners who had the capabilitiy of getting exactly 2 seconds didn't use it.

Most of the comments we hear are that P&S cameras can't compare to the abilities of a dSLR. Why not have a pure P&S challenge then? Failure to use a camera classified as a P&S are grounds for DQ.

Yes it would definitely classify as a P&S (at least when I look at Steve's List.

Right?

1 - Non detachable (and re-attachable:) lens [yeah, I know that includes some SLR's but it's simple and easy to understand - one would have thought].

2 - Sure, why not.

I like this idea... but like someone else said above, as an Exclusive Open and paired with a DSLR challenge so that no one needs to sit out that week due to a lack of equipment.

You're talking about an exclusive challenge based on equipment. Doesn't seem to fit the nature of the site.

I think i see whats being got at here, but to define a p&s would be tricky. Simply put, some have more 'freedom 'than others. I can see that say a canon or nikon DSLR's shots are head and shoulders above the rest in terms of picture quality etc, and anyone with a P&S despairs when they see the difference compared to theirs, and could feel aggreived, maybe feel that it's an unfair advantage? I suppose an option would be to 'grade' cameras, so a grade 1 canon eos etc wouldn't be in direct competition with a grade 4(?)sony dspc, if that makes any sense? Just a thought...

Besides which, you're assuming that good photography is in the camera. I think my average score with my old defunct P/S camera is still higher than my average score with the dRebel.

A lady says to the phographer during dinner that he must have a very expensive camera because his pictures were so nice. He replied that the lady must have very expensive pots and pans because her dinner was incredible!

How does making it an exclusive challenge make it worse than making it a members challenge? Not all members have the equipment either. I like the idea of it being exclusive because the second exclusive is often a counter to the first. And it's hardly the first time DPC has issued challenges based on equipment. Wide Angle immediately came to mind. And then all the various Macro challenges. And the Deep and Shallow DoF challenges. You can't buy those lenses for most P&S cameras, and so most P&S users entering those challenges are going to be called out either on the low image quality or as DNMC, both for lack of challenge-specific equipment.

since this is a photography site how about a challenge with no post prosessing besides maby crop and resize?

I relished the idea of technical challenges when I had my P/S camera because it forced me to figure out how to push the boundaries of my camera. It made me inventive. You can emulate a wide angle shot by shooting the right type of subject. You can have a shallow DOF shot if you chose the right type of subject. P/S cameras tend to do MUCH better at deep DOF. I did better at macro challenges with my p/s in macro mode because I don't have a macro lens now.

I also think that having a P/S challenge is like saying that you aren't good enough to run with the dSLR's. It's kinda condescending...

I think that would be the same to ask a film-photographer NOT to use the dark room :)

Ofcourse, I still have contrast, saturation, sharpness, WB, and other controls at my disposal in-camera if I shoot in JPEG mode, even on my P&S.
