I have been using the canon importing software and liked it but it was a resource hog. I have just reformated my computer and am trying to figure out the best way to get the photos from the cf card onto the computer.

I could just drag and drop, but i like having the images dropped into folders by which date they were taken, and possibly renamed.

does anyone have any other good sudjestions?

Be very careful with this kind of software. Some programs play nice, and others will mess with EXIF. The ones that mess with EXIF will quite possibly invalidate your files for use as originals. Some of these programs provide some editing functionality, and these programs almost always change the EXIF, and will certainly invalidate originals. We just had a DQ for this reason; the program was Nikon's Picture Project.

I'm using the Canon ZoomBrowser utilities (5.6 on one machine PIII and on my other machine version 5.1 P4). Neither seems to hog resources. The downloads take their time - same time on both machines - but I have enough resources (RAM) to do a number of other tasks at the same time.

As far as I can see, the Canon utilities have never messed with the EXIF data.

That's good to know ... I was considering installing the software that came with my digital rebel xt, but now I won't ... as of now, I just use the Windows features to copy from my camera to folders I've created and named the way I want them ... any suggestions for a better way to remove and organize them?

I have a Sandisk 12 in one reader for downloading all my photos from various memory cards (I think I've used 5 different cards in it so far). And it's quite a bit faster than downloading from the camera directly. I sort them by date downloaded, it's usually pretty close to the date the picture was taken, but that's just me.

I just drag and drop...it really doesn't seem to cost much time.

Picasa is notorious for modifying files, including auto-saving them without telling you. I don't recommend this for transferring files.

NO, that is not true.

I have about 15,000 files worth of proof of that. Go and test it. The originals are never saved over, Picasa Keeps it's own database of edits that have been made, and then only outputs the files with edits when sending to blogs, e-mail, printing, or exporting.

Yoiur experience runs counter to a number of other reports I've seen; could well be that there are version differences and/or settings that are different?
It's good to know that Picasa can be used successfully. I don't have it installed right now (I wouldn't use it except for testing) so I can't directly test it.

Cool, but I tell ya, it works like a charm. Maybe those were problems with version 1 or pre-1 version. I've had both and never had a problem. I should go back and check the EXIF on the ones downloaded from version 1 maybe, not that it matters at this point....

Card reader and Canon Zoombrowser (I love that program).

well quite a few votes for zoombrowser. That is what i was using before and i couldn't do anything at the same time... HOWEVER.. i think i have found something that works really good. EXTREMELY simple, and does the job, and very flexible. Can save the file automatically to whatever directory and create them if neccesary and renames the files quite nicely to a ton of differnt things that i can determine. It is here

Digital Image Mover

two thumbs up from me. :)

I was going to post a new topic with my questions but I think this topic might fit here.

Firstly - downloading photos from the camera. I have CS2 and if I download using the Adobe program I seem to lose my Raw files (only the JPEG files seem to load). Has anyone had this happen ? I have only started using raw lately - so it just might be me. I end up using the Canon download program which shows both the raw and jpeg.

Secondly - file organisation.I find the "Bridge" program in CS2 a bit confusing for organisation. It seems to be a slow program to load and doesn't appear to have an easy way of just moving photos around and dropping them into any folder you like. I think the simple Windows filing system seems an easier method. Now that my files are starting to grow I want a straight forward and easy to find system. Is anyone else having this problem or should I be spending time to get the program better ?
