Challenge Description: Use an interesting entry from a Word-a-Day list or archive
(e.g. //dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/archive/) as the inspiration and title of your photo.
Put the definition of the word in your photographer's notes.

Additional note: With online translation tools like //babelfish.altavista.com around, there is no reason to limit this to English.

Except that few would look it up.

I think that's probably ok. This would be a loose challenge - kind of a free study where the word-a-day sparks your decision of what to shoot, or, what to use as a title.

So what are we supposed to do, check every word of the day list to see if the word was actually on one of them? It would be a free study basically with one word titles. So why not just describe it/call it that?

Thanks for the questions, Alienyst. I don't see it as being about one-word titles so much as interesting, little-known words as titles.

Perhaps a better title for the challenge would be 'Vocabulary Word Challenge' with the photo's inspiration being 'the kind of word that is used in Word-a-Day lists'.

For example, look at these fun words in May:

Word of the Day Archive/May 2006

luminary: any body that gives light; also, a person of eminence or brilliant achievement.

daedal: skillful; artistic; ingenious.

temerity: unreasonable or foolhardy contempt of danger.

wag: a humorous person; a wit.

execrable: detestable; extremely bad.

rapine: the act of plundering.

pablum: something (as writing or speech) that is trite, insipid, or simplistic.

aspersion: a damaging or derogatory remark.

otiose: ineffective; also, being at leisure; also, of no use.

turgid: swollen, bloated; also, bombastic, pompous.

How about this:

Challenge: One Word
Pick a word and photograph your interpretion of that word. Your title should be your chosen word, and nothing more.

It would violate the TOS, and not even "turn up" among the DQd pictures at the "tail end" of the challenge.
