Wanted: Portable storage that reads CF cards

Is it possible to put a USB-Wifi connector on the camera, and another on the computer, and fool the camera into thinking it's talking directly to the computer? (i.e. the camera wouldn't need an IP stack, it would still be talking the USB protocols thru the USB port, then the WIFI connection to the computer would reverse the process and let talk to the computer thru the USB connetion)

Essentially, you're eliminating the USB wire that would normally connect from your camera to your PC and putting a wifi connection in its place.

Is that possible?

Theoretically, yes. Practically, I doubt they'd produce/sell.

ya but wouldnt it be great to just lissen to your ipod while taking pictures reviewing them on the seceen even thou the current one is kind of small (i think they will get bigger in next generations) and when you get home it automaticly connects to your puter (via bluetooth that you used to connect to your cammera) and downloads them to your puter. Almost totally hands free operation.

I just bought the GIGA ONE 40Gig and find it easy to use, but haven't completely tried out the various specifications yet. (I transferred a partially filled 1 Gig card in practically no time, but they say it is 6 minutes to download 1 Gig) But it's cheap, as these things go, and I'll be without a computer for 3-plus weeks, so it is much needed storage. I'll have to pass on the chance to view photos until I can get to a computer, but the price is right. They've just introduced an 80 gig version for around $230.

Of course, I probably bought the last 40 Gig B&H had because when I checked this morning, both versions are out of stock there.

I am looking into getting a storage device for my Hawaii trip in September, but reading reviews and such is twisting my brain!

Can someone please untangle what this means?

DPreview on the P-2000: "8.9 megapixel maximum JPEG size" (from the review of the Epson P-2000 storage viewer).

Wi-Pics makes a full line of wireless CF card replacements. Not all in the CF card, but attached by wire to a belt unit that can have a hard-drive, CF reader and standard wireless lan connection. It reads anything the camera writes to the 'CF card' and stores it directly on the harddrive or transmits it (with or without user defined sorting) to any wireless network it is setup to talk with. Basically, treating the harddrive or network storage as a CF card. Very nice.

I've been drooling over it since I found it, but at a $1600 pricetag it's way out of the price range of a hobby.

any more thoughts on this. I am now in the market as well and am not sure a preview screen is worth the $$.

what i don't like about an ipod is that you also need additional things to make it work. I just want one object to carry around... not a pocket full of things. Another con about the ipod is you can't switch out the battery. If you are on a 20 hour shoot, i don't think the ipod would last past hour 4... and you have no chance to get more power.

at $50 / gigabyte compact flash cards are pretty expensive.

a 60 gb Wolverinewith an lcd display goes for $350 which is only $5.80/ GB

well i just found out thatto change thebattery in the wolverine requires a screw driver :( not too conveniant. However the Hyperdirve takes AA batteries and looks good. No lcd though.

The hyperdrive (pd70x same thing) are great little devices. I only recently (for a trip starting next week) got it but they appear to do what they do well and are utilitarian which I like - nothing on it that is not meant to help copying a card. About the only thing I don't like is the VERY shallow CF card reader - it just feels like pins could be bent easily if you were not careful.

Beware that ordering hyperdrives are a real pain - mine took 5-odd weeks and they charged the credit card on day 2 :-// Not sure if it's still there but there was a posing on FM Buy&Sell from somebody that had 2 that he was selling.
