Here are a few pics I took at Yosemite. I have only been involved with photography for a couple of months now and I am looking for any advice possible on my pics. I would appreciate any comments on composition, color, Photoshop suggestions, how you would have done it differently, etc.

Thanks for all of your help.

I'm off to shoot. I'll come back to these. You might like to join in or at least read through the Landscape Learning Thread meanwhile :-)

Commented at some length. I hope you don't think me harsh, I actually like the pictures fine but I sense you not only CAN do better, you WANT to do better, so in that spirit...

As promised in comments, here's a couple quick reworkings of these two:

As per the landscape learning thread, I have used contrasdt masking but done it in reverse; I have used hard light or vivid light mode in the shadows mask to increase contrast, and I have used little or no adjustment in the brights mask. I have used a hue/saturation layer to bump up reds & yellows and desat and darken the blues to a less extreme chroma.

End result is a more powerful articulation of the rock surfaces, I think. What do you say?

Rob,

I like the reworkings, and especially your comments about the photos which, while nice, are almost exactly like some pictures I took at Yosemite and wondered why they lacked any real impact.

Learning an amazing amount from your thread - very grateful.
