Hi there,

Wanna step into the telephoto stage... looking at buying one of those two lenses as they seem to be in more or less the same price range. The IS in the canon range is out of my budget though... unfortunately.

Anyway, what would be the better one to go for? I was aiming for the Sigma but I just had a look around on the lenses section :

Canon Stats

vs

Sigma Stats

Is this a good way to compare though? To me it seems the Canon is doing better...?

Thats very nice, but it's out of my price range?

I've never owned either, but I've used the canon.

It's a decent lens, but I found that I had to stop down to f/8-11 on the long end to get images I was happy with... Which makes it hard to capture a lot of things you want the telephoto for in the first place... I never ran any official tests but I used it to shoot some little league baseball for my sister-in-law...

Hope this helps, I know it's not much...

I payed £149 for my sigma 70-300mm which i cheap for such a versatile lens.
I borrowed a canon 70-300mm usm III before i decided on the sigma. I picked the sigma over the canon because of it`s macro feature, at the time i had no lens for macro. I found focusing quicker and quieter on the canon but sigma is sharper but both a little soft at 300mm.
From canon

From Sigma
And sigma macro (heavy cropping)

How much is your budget?
i think it is around $520 or less, not that much, check again the model. Not with DO which is expensive, and if your budget is less than $400 then Sigma is good choice but don't complaint of quality or sharp, because i got Sigma 70-300mm but i am not satisfied with it in quality even has Macro option.

Thank Tryals15 and thank you Marbo for the effort!

I was leaning toward the Sigma more, so I think I will follow my instincts on this one!

Yes, You have the standard Sigma 70-300mm as listed on your proflie page, but the one I am talking about is the APO DG, which is a full $200 more (give or take).

I was told the difference between yours and the APO DG is quite significant.

I got APO DG which has red circle line on the top of lens
not so sharp as i want, or say it is not that much quality of normal telephoto from Canon itself, and it is around $200 i got too

You could also keep your eyes out for one of these: EF 100-300 f/5.6 L

There's a review of it here: link

Anyways, just a thought... They pop up on FM every now and again too...

This shot did ok in a recent challenge.
Took this one the other day at full 300mm.

Using the Sigma 70-300 APO DG. I've enjoyed the lens thus far.

When you looked at results, did you check the lens on other camera bodies - i.e. Nikon, Minolta, etc...?

Wow, your squirrels are fabulous!

What a great shot! I have yet to see a shot like that with the lens on a canon body!

I have the 75-300 and, as I've said before in the forums, I'll sell it to you very cheap. Its soft at the long end and very slow. I recently purchased the 70-300 IS and would highly recommend it. Its worth the extra money for the improved glass and the 3 stop IS.

I had the sigma (pre DG version) and it was nice, sharp and I liked it. When I got a 70-210 2.8 I just didn't use it anymore.

So unless you can stretch your budget to a canon 70-200 F4 ($500ish) then get the Sigma.

Samples - firt row at 300mm!

macro shot - 100% crop

All taken with the Sigma, all but one in Macro mode.

And all these

Does the Canon even havce a macro mode?

The Sigma 70-300mm is the most versatile lens that I own. The macro mode is great and handles long shots with ease. A sample macro shot.

The Sigma 70-300 is currently the best in its price range (beats the Canon and the Tamron models). But make sure you get the APO, the regular one is pretty crappy.

The Canon one with IS is loads better than any of the above, but again, it's a bit pricey (in the 70-200 f/4L price range). Right now, the Sigma is your best bet.

I tried the Sigma 55-200 which is basically the same lens but slightly smaller and hated it. I upgraded to the 100-300 f/4, which was quite an upgrade (put me back $750) but my god, I love this lens.

Shot, thanks a lot for the help guys... only an hour to go before that baby joins my collection!! :)

I'll post some pics when I play around with it a bit!

WOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO got the lens!!

Took a few shots in the office, one of which is a candid of a colleague of mine...

(Damn, ppl get annoyed whenever I take my camera out) :)

Anyhow, it's damn sharp, but also bearing in mind I had to flash!

So far it seems kick-ass... can't wait for this weekend to have a good try-out outside!
