Has anyone running Win XP ran in to any problems after a recent patch?
I have had three people call me today with this problem.
After patching their machines would not restart and I had to have them do a restore from Safe Mode?
Their machines would try to reboot and all it would say is MS XP is shutting down in 60sec. and would not reboot.
Is this tied to a virus or etc going arounf that someone may have heard of?

Robin,
I've got XP Pro with all updates installed through about two weeks ago. No problems. This is a recently re-installed system, though, so maybe not representative.

| I work for an online game and this has affected at least 20-30 people that I know of - something to do with RPC. I'm not quite sure what it is, but it certainly seems to be affecting a lot of people today, and it appears to be quite frustrating. |

There is a whole in the security (again) in ALL windows version except Millenium. There is a patch on MS's site to fix this hole.
If you are behind a firewall that only opens port 80 you are not being affected.
What is happening is that other systems are being told to bang your system threw the hole.
Run the patch and it all goes away... Your machines are actually being attacked...

you must do mroe than just apply the patch unfortunatly, you also have to delete a registry key, and delete msblast.exe off your system..
there are some procedures at the bottom of this page for the registry stuff

I have not had any problems.
The one person that did call me said her friend was having this trouble so she went out and did the patch/upgrade from Microsoft and then she was experienceing the same problems afterwards.
Their machines would try to reboot and after failing to do so, it then said it was shutting down in 60 sec or etc.
Strange?

If the patch is installed through Windows Update then all necessary steps are taken to install it properly.
At least I did it that way and have had no problem.

Well I´m reading the news on //www.mbl.is saying that its a VIRUS called LovSan that does just what you complain about.
So my advice do you guys that have that problem is to do a viruz check after you update your virus definitions

Looks like a worm based on the recent windows RPC exploit is slowly infecting the windows hosts on the net. In the past hour, there has been a lot of traffic and random machine reboots ( of even machines that are not even connected directly to the net, but inside a LAN - a sure sign of a worm).
If you are sysadmin please block ports 135/139/445 and 4444 ( the worm executes commands remotely via this port ) at your router.
If your windows machine is rebooting after every 1 min or so, then unplug your machine from the network first,
To fix the RPC bug on your machine, install this Microsoft patch : //www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-026.asp
Search for msblast.exe and delete that file
Alternatively get the latest virus updates from your vendor and scan

if your friend's friend has an illegal copy of windows xp, and installs the patch (service pack 1), it will prevent that computer from restarting properly. This might be a possibility to your problem.
