Advantages of smugmug over pbase.....or are they pretty similar? I think pbase is a bit cheaper for a yr

Well I was looking for a place to sell photos which would do fulfillment like DPCPrints but at a lower percentage cut. And with a bit more professional looking gallery.

But it is quite expensive for that annually--$150. So a couple of days ago I signed up for the Power User account, for $59, minus the $5 discount. I have two of my own virtual servers I can use, but who can beat unlimited photo storage for $59 per year? And on top of that, so far I like the software.

I am still looking for a place to sell though. $150 is too much off of the profit margin with my sales being pretty low (at least so far, under DPCPrints.) But I may change my mind, being that if I am in for $54 already, it's just $96 more. Well, that's a fair amount! It used to be $99, that sounds much better to me.

I tried it before and I though the management interface was a pain. But now it's quite nice. Drag and drop to load photos to load them, even in Firefox. Gallery set up is easy.

My only complaint so far (in my whole 2 days of membership) is that while it can be used as an offsite backup for your photos (a bargain at $59), if you ever DO need to recover your files from them, you must buy DVDs from them, which are about $50 each or so. So you pay $15 per gigabyte should you need their services to recover. Though that's better than a higher annual fee, since you pay that every year.

Also, for any referrals you make, they get a $5 discount, and you get $10. And that can help ease the burdon of their prices.

I pay another backup service for my consulting business data $16.95 per month for offsite backup (its actually very nice, automatic, every night). You can download what you need for free, but it's still more expensive than Smugmug for that, and I have a 4GB limit there, and no limit on SmugMug!

EDITED TO ADD:

What I now hope to do with SmugMug is use it to show more of my "raw" work, to do what I find hardest--selecting the best few photos photo from a set I shot. Being able to load a whole directory of images after simply converting from RAW without concern for disc space (and hopefully bandwidth). For example, I'd love it if anyone wanted to look through these macro abstracts I posted, and tell me if there are any in there you like that I should process further and "finish".

Here's my first "share":

Any of these catch your eye?

The $100 fee for my pro account on smugmug was free this year because several nice people used my coupon code when they signed up. I even had a couple referrals left over for next year. So, I guess that my smugmug account is paying for itself, only not the way I expected. :)

I've sold several prints and even a few photo usage rights during that time too, so it's worked out very well for me.

BTW, if anyone else is thinking of getting a smugmug account, please feel free to use my coupon code qzDagz7w1S78w on the signup page.

Yes, it used to be $100, and now, for new Pro level users, it's $150! That's a big increase. (It's nice they keep you at your join level, but, I wish they hadn't increased the price so much.)

Question: Are you active in "promoting" your gallery, or are you being found by people browsing smugmug?

If you have have more than about 5 gigabytes of images (And who doesn't) then it is a lot cheaper, faster and easier to buy your own external hard disks for off site storage than it is to use SmugMug's service.

I'm mainly looking for a gallery I can put images from events in. Give people the url, then they contact me if they want to buy. Won't be full size as on dialup it's too much of a pain u/l.

Gallery I've currently got has a ginormously awkward url that even I can't remember. I want something simple for business cards. Looked into setting up a site but it's not cost-effective at this stage.

Best options seem to be pbase or smugmug so far as I can see

Sorry Neil, the only promoting that I've done is my tagline. :)

I'm not a professional photographer by any stretch of the imagination, nor do I have any desire to become one. I keep getting asked by friends to shoot various events, such as weddings, graduations, etc., and I needed a place where I had complete control over who was allowed access to specific photos.

Still, I do get a lot of people just browsing through. A few buy prints and/or leave comments, but most just come to look.

Even though I'm not a pro, it still wouldn't hurt to sell more prints. If you come up with a good way to promote your site, please do share it with me. :)

If you want people to contact you directly to buy, and if you don't need private galleries, then there are some free sites that you might want to consider. I've never used any of them, so I can't comment on their features.

Regarding your dialup users, with smugmug galleries the viewer can specify a size at which they would like to view your images. Depending on the sizes you allow, they can select small, medium, large, or original.

yep I would also go with smugmug, I love the unlimited amount of space, I have just about a gig of images now, I also love all the customization you can do to your site, I also love the protection features on your images and being able to set your own prices on your prints is nice too.

Very happy with smugmug

Thanks Mick. I've checked out most of the free sites and with many of them can't do a lot of customising and you get a load of ads. It's me on dialup so am not planning on uploading originals ....just resized ones. I guess I'm really wanting my work to look professionally presented....preferably an easy site to upload to (FTP would be great) I get out to a heap of rugby/stock car meets. Oh .....and to be able to pay by paypal if poss.
