Rosco P. Coltrane

Tonight was "Dukes of Hazzard" night at the local minor league baseball park. I had the pleasure, if you can call it that, of meeting Mr. James Best, who played the role of Rosco P. Coltrane in the TV series. When I found out he was attending the game, I got excited about the opportunity to photograph him.

When he arrived at the park prior to the game, had a couple tables waiting where he would sit, sell his memorabilia photos, and sign autographs. Everyone who attended (there were hundreds of people who came to see him) had the opportunity to get a free postcard sized image autographed by the funny man. I observed for a while and quickly realized that something was not quite right about this session. Lots of fans had brought some of their own memorabilia and toys for autographs, and these autographs were not 'free' to the fans. It just didn't feel right and I was slightly disappointed in the overall experience.

You mean they were charging for an autograph?
I agree, that is just plain wrong.

Well come on Rosco and Hogg were always trying to pull something. Maybe he was in character...

...He looks like he's gained some weight.

that's the reality of celebrity afterglow...they gotta make a living somehow.

either they go to fan conventions or memorabilia shows where they are paid by the organizers who charge admission, or they go where they can charge. their signatures are devalued or valued, depending on the uniqueness of what they sign. if they sign 10,000 postcards, well, they're probably worthless, unless he dies the next day. on the other hand, if you bring the hood of one of the cars wrecked on the set (and that can be authenticated), you'll have a signature worth significantly more...

as always, though, you got another great shot.

Instead of my cat, my car gets that dubious honor. Shortened, of course, to just Roscoe...

The 'fee' for the autographs was only when the fan had an object he/she wanted signed. The postcards were free or you could buy a $15 print that they brought with them and get it signed for free... It still just smelled bad to me.

I haven't seen this done at a ball game, but it's common practice at Star Trek, Sci Fi and comic conventions. It's how many of these keep admission prices low. The signer accepts a lower fee to appear, but makes money on the autographs. If you haven't been to one of these convertions, you ain't seen nothing. Believe me.

Too true. Too bad a lot of stars from the past didn't have great contracts where they still make a lot of money for some of their old shows :(
