OK, time for the honest opinions.

- was this pain to vote on/view?

There were comments made in forums about people not using the full resolution, and yet there were others that punished people that stretched the image vertically to the full extent.

I was one of those that used 720 vertically. Consequence - only ~190 views during the vote and ~150 votes. I've never had less...

I was OK with voting in this challenge, F-11 helped, and it wasn't a pain.
But, I don't want to enter another challenge where people will judge based on their monitor resolution. I think that 640x640 is just fine and should stay (OK, stretch the horizontal to 720 but leave the vertical limit at 640 and screw all those portrait shooters).

Well, you might have a point about the reduced voting - but it should probably be pointed out that all three ribbon winners used the maximum verticle resolution (or close to).

I, for one, am glad to have the pleasure of the extra eighty pixels of Librodo's amazing image.

I voted on a widescreen laptop and with the F11 feature, had no problem at all. I rather like the 720 idea.

I voted on this challenge from my 1024x768 laptop screen (using F11) and even with the non-optimal current layout of the voting page, I did not find it a pain to vote. The images that used the extra real estate effectively were stunning, and there were many. Look at the top scores, they are very high. I believe this is in some part due to the incrreased impact possible at the higher resolution.

jeesh... I didn't even know about f11 till I saw this thread.

Cool.

Hmm, you're right. Before I proceed, I want to congratulate Manny on a superb image (again). Now, I want to say that even Manny got 160 votes. Only. That should not diminish his very well deserved ribbon, that's not my intention. However, with 2640 members + 17 SC + 2 admin = 2659 eligible voters/viewers, we are getting this kind of response.

Maybe it was just a busy week for all... still 310 people participated, and the score ranged from 3.2-8.2... compare it to an (almost) parallel member challenge "Yellow":

Textures:
Submissions: 310
Votes: 45,428
Comments: 1,564

Yellow:
Submissions: 403
Votes: 71,360

Statistics means nothing, I agree. Just didn't feel right... let's hear more opinions?

I put my image up at max length of 660 and I still lost detail saving at 200k. If 720 is a new norm then file size needs to go up a bit yet.

As for scores being higher because of the 720, I disagree. The blue was an exception. If you look at the overall avg score for this challenge vs others in the last couple of months the avg for this challenge comes in pretty normal. Some recent challenges higher, some lower.

Personally, I prefer the 640 size we have now. If it goes higher, then both dimensions need to be equal (horizontal and vertical).

I liked the better resolution/size this one provided, but I use AOL and its built in browser (for which F11 doesn't work - at least not for me) so I did find the extra scrolling to be disruptive to my viewing an image as a whole.

I can tell you I didn't find time to vote because I found all of the challenges to be too overwhelming (both in submission size and just having a billion challenges all at once to worry about). So I ended up focusing on shooting and attempting to vote on just one challenge while on briefly glancing through the thumbnails of the other challenges in the voting stage.

Maybe others were in the same boat as I was.

BTW - my favorite of the challenge was that gorgeous red feather one. Wow, I was surprised it didn't ribbon.

What I noticed on mine was a view 2 vote abnormality. Most of the challenges I enter average 70 to 80+% but this challenge it was only 60% (144 votes and 237 views). It could of been repeat views because I was asked to submit an original.

But I liked the 720x720 @ 200k. It was fun and did not pose a problem to me while voting.

The 720px wide version did not have more impact on me than 640px wide. It added very little.

I didn't vote, time is a great issue for me at the moment and I'm not getting to vote as much as I would like to. I think that you have to take into consideration that this challenge was an 'extra' rather than one that is within the mainstream programme of one member, two open per week and as such people would need to dedicate additional time in order to vote, for many of us this additional time just did not happen.

i will repeat... i multitask too much.... i will not use f11 to view a photo to vote on... if i have to vote on photos that are too big for my screen.. i'll vote on the bottom half... just like i did for textures...

Just a question? Is there a reason you won't use the quick punch of the f11 key to view the entire image? IMO, I wouldn't even bother voting only seeing half the image.?

ok then i wont vote if i cant see the whole photo.. if people used more dpi per square inch instead of making the photo huge it would allow me to vote on the photo as a whole... but i am not goignto hit f11 then unhit it to view each photo

You just need to hit f11 once, not every time. It just removes the title bars, and address bars and stuff. You still have the navigation bar at the top. It stays big thru every page change, until you unhide the stuff.

edit to add: I'm actually not trying to debate you Di, even at f11, full 720 pix still have about 10 pixels that need to be scrolled on my screen too. Maybe not a big deal, but personally, I didn't notice a significant difference in quality to warrant the change. Some people I noticed sized to 700, this seemed to fit well. Might be interesting if say, any of the top 5 that used full 720 would post side by side comparisons of their shots at 640, we could see a practical example of what kind of difference in impact the sizes may have.

yeah i know but when you are working in more than one window its a pain in the butt.. if i'm in 3 or 4 windows at the same time and i need some next to each other not on top of each other... well f11 is a pain ...
so i for one will not use it ...

didn't even realize that this was going on! When i look at the pics in F11 it looks fine to me, but just barely fits on the screen. I wouldn't say a pain to vote for this size, but no bigger. Still some people won't see the whole image when voting.

Not to be rude but that seems like a pretty lame excuse. I regularly have 10+ explorer windows up doing things (plus multiple other applications up). Now I didn't realize before this thread that f11 would fullscreen the particular window but I would suggest that it wouldn't be a disruption to have your voting window at f11 and vote on a couple of pictures then go back to your other windows to do work. That is where comes in handy. But that is just me.

I also played around with my monitor settings and changed my desktop to 1152x864. Seemed like a nice size and is easy on the eyes with my 17" monitor. The photo fits perfectly but I do have to scroll down to select the score.

I have this problem too, and for me, it is a big deal. If I can't see all of the image at once - even if only a little bit is getting left off - then I'm not seeing the image as the photographer wanted it to be presented, and I do not feel I can make an accurate judgment while voting.

I believe that f11 is particular to the window that you use it in. I was using multiple windows on multiple machines to show off my recent fly pictures, and I had no problems with any sort of conflict.

The only real thing that you can't do in f11 mode is enter a URL. You then only need to hit F11 to enter the URL.

Further, as was already mentioned, just opening a window for voting and hitting f11 in it is sufficient. It doesn't need to affect anything else you are doing. Simple, clean and easy.

I personally feel that there should be a small reminder for each user if it is the first time they are viewing a picture over 640 pixels high that they can try to use f11. I use it even for 640x640 pixel pics. I find they just look better.

Is there any chance that we could get more profile space?

I do UI design and usability studies for a fortune 500 company. A consistent message we receive from those surveyed is to not make them scroll to complete a function, and don't make them modify their configuration to interact with our platform.

a vertical 720 px image doesn't work for enough people yet. I can't say that I would recommend it's adoption.

I agree. I used the max size allowed (720) and also lost detail saving.
