I went to lunch with a group of people from work today. I drove, so naturally, my Canon 20D came along for the ride.

I always (always) place my camera "out of sight" (or what I thought was out of sight) in the driver foot well (close to the pedals) when I get out of the truck...I remember locking the truck, since it beeped and I recall thinking how loud it sounded echoing off the building.

After lunch, I got back in the truck and was talking with the other people so I didn't think about it until we got back to the office (about 10 minutes)...We then searched the car. Nothing.

Went back to the restaurant.
Nothing - but left my number and description with the manager.

Now, I'm going to check my truck for a third time and then file a police report.

The ONLY thing I can think of (since there was no sign of entry) was that when I put my keys in my pocket, I may have inadvertantly unlocked the doors...if so, that was a VERY expensive mistake.

I feel sick to my stomach and I am so angry right now.

If anyone sees something like this on eBay - Canon 20D, battery grip (2 batteries), 2Gig card, 50mm w/ lens hood coming from PA or NJ, please let me know. Thanks.

Sorry to hear it Matt! If I come accross anything on eBay, etc, I'll let you know.

If you have the serial number for the camera you should take it to your local pawn shops right away, also post it on fredmiranda.com

Good Luck!

LOL - Shame - not a good thing. My 350D is hidden away inside my house - even when I am there it stays hidden. When I leave I make sure that all the doors are locked (Also the BIG metal Gates and burglar bar windows). Also make 100% sure my armed response alarm is activated.

When I travel with the camera - it stays with me - EVERYWHERE. Around here a camera like that can easily help the unemployed...

Go back, with a different car, place an empty camera bag on the back seat (as bait) and then see who shows up looking in cars. Have another camera and film the whole thing. Turn the shots over to the police. Maybe the person is on file.

Maybe this parking lot is a hotspot. Put an ad on craigslist asking if anyone else has lost anything there. Even reporting that your camera was lost. Craigslist can help.

I checked your exif for your 5th place submitted proof, and sometimes it lists the serial number in the exif, I didn't see it, but it does list a Camera Body No., so maybe that will help?
Sorry to hear you lost the cam, good luck getting it back.

That might just work - there but not here. Around here if they didn't take the truck the first time around, they will definately take it the second time along with the empty camera bag and your video camera you filming the whole thing with.

Yeah. I've read the rules.
And yes, I broke the rule.

I'm pissed off, ya see?

Just teasing you. There are few things I hate more then a thief. I bet you wish you could get your hands on them!

Rule number 43b, if someone does post about having left the camera in their car and it being stolen. Don't rub there face in it by posting rule 43. They're already suffering enough suckage as it is.

Hmm, that brings an interesting thought to mind. They have LowJack for cars, laptops and everything else these days. How long will it be before we have LowJack for cameras?

That's cool. I was 'bout to drive out to Arizona and beat you silly.
Now I don't have to. :)

Just checked my truck...they popped the exterior lock (or pushed it in) and also got my iPod ("hidden") in my center console.

Ouch, that's awful !!
Same thing happened to my 300D last Saturday
(car window smashed and camera gone), so I know exactly how you are feeling now....
Did you lose many lenses as well?

I'm sorry to hear that. Thankfully, I left my camera bag at home (with the 100-400mm 4.5 L, and my other zoom at home). So I only lost the 50mm, which, all things considered, is good.

That sucks. My car has autostart and I start it up by accident sometimes while pocketing my keys. :-(

sorry to hear that Matt. I hope you are covered by Homeowner's Insurance :)

One of the things I learned from watching some show (probably 20/20 or something) where they interview thieves about how they steal is that "hiding" anything while you're in the parking lot does no good because those people are probably already sitting there watching you hide your stuff. If you have something you want to keep hidden in your car, put it in your trunk before you leave the house. I'm awful about this too but maybe the tip will help someone else.

Sorry to hear about this Matt. What a totally helpless feeling that must be...mixed with lots of anger! I hope you're able to somehow recover it or recoup expenses.

Damn guys that really is lame. I'm so terrified about leaving anything in my truck I take my rig everywhere with me. I know it's a pain but if my camera is with me when I leave the house it stays with me until I get back home.

I wish you the best of luck and may karma smite the bastard(s) that took your babies.

Ugh! Sorry to hear that. As someone else suggested, I'd be tempted to go back around the same time and make it obvious that you're hiding something, then walk away and wait- with video camera in hand. I hope it shows up (preferably before the next Challenge deadline).

Just use a "friends" vehicle so that they don't get tipped off...

That really sucks, sorry to hear about that. My car was broken into a few years ago and they ripped out my stereo (tearing up the whole dash), amps, subwoofer, etc. They also took whatever else they could find, even a rechargeable razor!

A local pro photographer had his car broken into outside a church he was scouting for a wedding the next day. They stole his stereo and cd case- but ignored the Lowepro bag sitting in the backseat (in perfect view), with two F5 bodies and a D70, plus about a billion $'s in lenses.

About 10 years ago someone prised open the trunk of my car.

There were only two things in there. A case of Budweiser. And a PC.

They took the bud.

actually, i'm making it a point this weekend to write down the serial numbers of all of my stuff. we got a stern talking-to at our last neighborhood watch meeting.

i'm really sorry about your luck. the first time my car got broken into all they took was my dirty laundry and about 8 rolls of film to be developed. all of the pictures of my kitten were gone and i was so lazy in getting them developed that he was a full-grown cat by the time it was stolen. :(

at least they got stuck with my nasty drawers. ha ha!
