Ok, I'm trying to determine whether there could be a hidden message within this image. I'm working on a Geocaching puzzle called "white noise," and this is about the only clue there is to go by. I'm specifically looking for a series of lat/long coordinates.

I can't find anything hidden in here in any form, but I'm curious if anyone else can find any hidden message that I'm missing...

I am linking the image here. Note -- the image is completely white, so it won't look like the link is going anywhere. I have a nice shiny nickel for anyone who finds the answer! :)

Geek alert! :P

Btw, the link isn't working for me.

ETA: doh!

After a few tests, I found nothing...
04/05/2006 06:51:07 PM · #5
there is no info in this image, I've opened it in photoshop and checked metadata, no info there, I checked levels and there is only one white spike so no extra info, this is a bitmap image so there is nothing hidden in any channel..

so I guess it's just a white image ;)

the only thing I found is :

created with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 for Windows
date : 2005-11-30 14:26:40
600x400 pixels, colorspace 65535 colors

no hidden message...

There is definitely nothing there. I played with it in photoshop and there is nothing besides a white square.

edit: Try playng around with the web address using different combinations

The only information about this image is it's dimensions are 600x400.

I can't find anything either (obviously). This is the Geocache page, if you're interested:

Yah, it's pure white. Not even a ghost of other information in it.

What about something like this?

Steganography

Could it be simple like NW.jpg meaning you need to go NW?
04/05/2006 07:07:41 PM · #13
There IS, however, some embedded data and (probably related) XML code in the file header. It does not directly give any information that provides a clue, but may very well be the key to unlocking what's there. How to interpret it, I have not a clue. Can't post it directly here because of obsenely long non-wrapping lines. To see it, open the file in WordPad and scroll down.

well...the title of the pic is WN so could this be West and North? The coordonates might be related to the dimensions of the pic(height, width). But it's just a guess. It's curious though that they say the photo is jpg but when you save it it's bmp. :)

A good thought, indeed... but it didn't pan out :(

Alan,

No luck here, maybe it's something that makes sense once you get to the park where it seems to be located? (Along route 136).

The one thing that jumps out at me is that that's an all-white JPEG so it should compress extremely well. Still, it's almost 55K. If I save from Photoshop at max quality, I get a 15.8K file. That's a lot of metadata, and I'll bet some of it holds the solution to your puzzle.

Well, I'm concluding that it has nothing to do with the image itself. I had noticed the same things everyone else here has, but haven't found anything suspicious. I figure if a bunch of photo geeks can't find anything hidden in the image, it can't be the image itself (several other people have figured this thing out, and I doubt they're nearly as image-sophisticated as we are!).

My brain hurts.

Incidentally, I thought of you the other day when I was driving behind a station wagon with a PA license plate of G-OCACHE.

It's curious that the image is called "white noise" when all it contains is white...

Ha! I want one! :)

It got me thinking that someone who does both Geocaching and Where's George could go with G-OCASH.

does this do anything for you:

White Noise: A random noise that contains an equal amount of energy per frequency band. That is, 100-200, 800-900, and 3000-3100. Pink noise has an equal amount of energy per octave. The bands I O0-200, 800-1600, and 3000-6000 all contain the same amount of energy.
