I agreed to do some head and full body shots for a co-worker. Her daughter is attending a Talent Search in April. The only catch I had was they had to done on slides. Can you make slides from digitals? Just wondering in case I'm not too happy with the slides we shot.
I do welcome your comments, would love your feedback in fact! Here is some info on our session. She is 17. She has absolutely no experience whatsoever (which I was not expecting). I had to offer her quite a bit of direction. Her hair was exremely difficult to work with, and of course now I can think of all sorts of different poses for her to work with that hair at different angles. She only needs one head shot and one body shot (whether it is full body, 1/2 or 3/4).

My Favorite. It's very good. The first I dont like at all... her hips don't look right. Second to last I dont care for either. The perspective and ear bother me.
Favorites: 2, 4, and 6
Don't Like: 1 or 5
The other two are alright. |

I agree, I prefer the last image.
Your photography is good. Her appearance is good, but she doesn't seem to have the hair, makeup, and wardrobe of an aspiring model.
It's as if your co-worker wanted to sell his car and needed some pics, so he brought it over with a flat tire and dirty windows. You did what you could.
More suggestions (or at least ideas) to make her look more model-like might be over at OneModelPlace. |

I agree. The last one is the best of the bunch. #1 is unflattering. Same with #5. Those two poses need a bit of a "tune up". #4 could be improved with catchlights in her eyes, but still I like it.

i realy like your photos, one thing i can give you an idea on is try and not crop off body parts, i am not exactly what the rule it i think the main rule is not at the knees or elbos or ankles, something like that, I am tottaly guilty of it also, my last shoot i did, i made sure they were completly in the fram, then just cropped in photoshop.

I really like the last one, her pose is really relaxed and that makes her sexy unlike the other images were she's a bit stiff.
with a body like that you just have to show the right curves :)

Hi Julie,
I left comments on each shot. I hope they are all helpful. Overall, I think you and her have great potential. I'd love to see a follow up shoot applying some of the suggestions in this thread. In a future shoot, I'd like to see a larger variety of angles to show off her versitility from all perspectives. In these shots we see her right cheek exclusively. Good job and good luck!

Thank you EVERYONE for your helpful comments!! They all truly were in depth and offered me the outside perspective I needed. These are the shots in my order of preference.
I think this one is my favorite because it was the best expression I got from here. There were a lot of comments overall about the lack of smile. She had braces (which are coming off soon) so she was very reluctant to smile.
Naturally, I liked this one. Her pose gave her curves that she didn't really have. The wind helped out just a little on this one. I do regret cropping the hands off. I wish I had time to reshoot by Friday, but I don't think we can get it in works. She needs to make her choice and send it off by Friday. I shot everything in digital first so we could both see what we were working towards. I then repeated every shot using the 35mm with slide film. She was truly more relaxed for the slide shots and I should get those tomorrow.
For me, she looks the most relaxed in this shot. I really had to PULL to get that hand to roll through the hair correctly without the fingers bent awkardly. (You can see her braces here, so I am sure she will hate it...her Mom on the other hand, I expect will love it). If..IF...IF...I were not so dog gone intimidated by the FLASH, or if I just learned to use a reflector!!! Thanks for the comments on this one. I think you have made my decision for me...it is time to invest in a reflector and maybe some sort of diffuser for the flash I've got.
I think I am just drawn to the odd angle in this one and will defenitely give it a try in B/W
I am drawn to this one because it elongates her figure so much. The crop suggestions were great...thanks!
I think she could have used a little heel in this one and would have worked best in her mini skirt that we shot at home I think. She was about 3 feet up on this one, so I am not sure that it would have been easy to get up there in a mini and the vehicles that passed by, only added to her nervousness.

Look into Fong's Lightsphere, for portraits/people it does wonders! In your case definitely worth the investment.
I definitely think the second shot is (with the curves) is the one for her to submit.

What do you think of an edit such as this... I've added a little bit of shading through dodge & burn and I've also added catch lights to her eyes while lighting the eyes a bit anyway.

No they don't. they are out door images... catch lights are not always required.

She needs to wear a different bra, you can clearly see the underwire fitting improperly through her tank. She needs more shoots to get comfortable with her body. Maybe sit and go through a few magazines with her and talk about how the models pose and why their poses work vs why hers don't really work. Learning to pose is that, learning, she needs to try to copy poses in the mirror and "feel" them with her body.

I had the chance to reshoot my model one more time before she made her selections to submit for her competition. I took ALL of the suggestions into consideration when shooting my new work. I did not shoot as many digitals this time since it was more important to get the slides perfect for her to submit them. I did convert one of my digitals to a slide for her.
My favorite, shot from a step stool using a reflector to add some light into the face and careful not to 'cut off' arms/hands, etc. Thank you ALL again for your suggestions. We had a lot more slides to choose from this time around.
In color
In black and white
And a new 'body' shot
One more thing to add, she is 15, and not 17 like I originally thought.

I like 'em! I prefer the color over the b&w, I think mainly because it is more obvious that the brighter light is on her lower half rather than up on her face. Perhaps a bit of dodge and burn could bring her out of the shadow and put the emphasis back on her face. But I really do like #1 and #3 - a lot! Well done.
