We were out for a drive near Half Moon Bay (California) and left the camera in the car. Some thieves broke into the car and stole my dear Rebel and Sigma 70-300 :(( (in addition to my cellphone). Some of my best pictures are taken with that camera and lens!

It's horrible :((

That is horrible. You have inspired me to finally call my insurance agent. I am so sorry this happened to you.

Oh No Arpita!!!!
So sorry to hear that.
Hopefully you have insurance to cover the vehicle's contents.
Though I had all my gear stolen some 15 years ago, I can still remember the sick feeling.
:(

i am sooo sorry to hear that arpita ;( my Rebel also got stolen when my cra was parked at the Oakland Airport. Call the Police and file a report. The report comes in handy in insurance claims. Your car insurance will not cover it but if you have renters or homeowners insurance, you're fine ;)

Good luck!

Dang thats terrible :( I'm paranoid about leaving anything of value in my car. I always lock it in the truck.

I have a question....when I've decided to leave my camera in the car I always put it in the trunk....is this still a bad thing as well? (I don't do it during Summer..too hot...) In regards to someone stealing it...I was just curious if that's a problem too...

If your cell phone has some kind of tracking like 911 tracking maybe you can find them.

If it was stolen from the car wouldn't that be covered by car insurance? I'm not up on all that, so could be wrong.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Arpita. You took a lot of great pictures with that setup. If you need a replacement until you get a new camera, I recently bought a 350XT to replace my 300D and haven't yet put the 300D on eBay. If you need a camera to use until you replace yours, just PM me. Can't help you with the lens, unfortunately.

It's actually usually covered by renter's or homeonwer's insurance. If you have that, Arpita, you could file a claim.

So, have you called your cell phone yet?

My mother had hers stolen from her locked car and insurance refused to cover it because there was no sign of scratches from someone breaking in, so they claimed she'd left it unlocked.

Not that I recommend such things, but....

This was a while ago, when I was living in L.A. My friend and I are driving around in his truck, about 11pm or so and stop at this 7-11 to get some beverages. We had to park in a spot that was facing away from the store, across the parking lot. We're walking out with our snacks and beverages, when we notice the door of his truck is open and there is a pair of feet sticking out. My friend, who was a big athletic guy, runs up on this guy, drags him out of the cab and proceeds to pummel the living hell out of him. Someone must have called the police because eventually, they show up, just as my friend finishes this guy off and leaves him crumpled on the ground.

They interrogate my friend and me for a while, until the ambulance comes and takes the guy away, probably to the hospital. Anyway, after the ambulance leaves, the cops tell us that the guy was wanted on about 10 felony warrants, to just get in our truck, get the hell out of there and don't come back. They acted kinda like they were upset that they couldn't beat the crap out of him themselves.

Unfortunately we don't have renter's insurance... we had an option to pick it a month ago but couldn't think why on earth we'd need it.

Wish it were an April Fool's joke... but the only fool here is me. No leaving cameras in the car henceforth for me :(

Yeah, this is what I was wondering... Could you possibly track them through the cell phone? I know it's a long shot, but...

I know it's late for the camera, but renter's insurance is very inexpensive and a very good thing to have. Let's say, for example, that a fire damages your apartment. Your landlord's insurance will pay for the damage to the building, but NOT for the damage to your personal belongings. Those would need to be covered by your renter's insurance.

Once you recover or replace your camera you might look into getting a personal articles policy on your camera and lenses. This is also quite inexpensive (I think I'm paying about $35/year to cover about $4000 in equipment), covers your equipment specifically (regardless of any limits on your renters insurance) and, at least with the policy I have, does not carry a deductible. Also, claims against a separat personal articles policy don't raise the rates on your homeowners insurance.

Well, in most newer cars the trunk can be popped from inside the car. So, once they are in your car, they also have access to your trunk. Sooooo...
