Brackets have been updated for week 5!

The brackets have been made up and are posted here. The competition will begin with the challenges announced this Tuesday night.

A REMINDER TO ALL PARTICIPANTS: DPChallenge changes to Daylight Saving (Summer) time during the first week of competition Be sure not to miss the deadline!

Good luck to everyone!

OFFICIAL RULES

1. This contest is not run by or associated with DPChallenge.com.

2. The entry fee for the tournament is $10 USD.

3. The tournament is open to the first sixty-four (64) entrants whose entry fees are received by the organizer. At the organizer's option, the tournament may be canceled if there are fewer than 64 entrants. In the event of cancellation, all entry fees will be refunded.

4. Once the seeds are announced, brackets are final and entry fees are non-refundable.

5. The group will be randomly divided into four groups of sixteen (16) participants each. Within each group, the participants will be ranked by the following statistics on their DPChallenge profile pages as of the date the bracket assignments are calculated:
* a. Average Vote Received, with ties broken by
* b. Number of Ribbons Received (excluding invitational challenges), with remaining ties broken by
* c. Number of Blue Ribbons Received (excluding invitational challenges), with remaining ties broken by
* d. Number of Red Ribbons Received (excluding invitational challenges), with remaining ties broken by
* e. Highest score received, with remaining ties broken by
* f. Coin toss

6. If the contest is run with less than 64 entrants, “byes” will be seeded randomly.

7. For the first round, the highest ranked entrant in each group will be paired (“seeded”) with the lowest ranked entrant in that group. The second highest entrant will be paired with the second lowest entrant, and so forth. The brackets will be organized so that the higher seeds in each pair are arranged in the same manner in each succeeding round (the winner of 1/16 plays the winner of 8/9, winner of 2/15 plays winner of 7/10, etc). The semifinal and final rounds will be seeded by comparing the statistics of the highest seeded entrants in each group.

8. The contest will consist of one round each week. Each entrant competes by entering either regularly scheduled “Exclusive Open” challenge on DPChallenge which begins Tuesday night at midnight, as indicated by the time listed on the DPChallenge.com web site. In each pair, the entrant with the highest score will be the winner of that round and will advance to the next round (or, in the final round, will win the tournament). Ties will be broken by
* a. Number of comments received during voting
* b. Votes of “10” as percentage of total votes received, followed by “9,” “8,” etc.
* c. Coin toss

9. If a participant does not enter a weekly challenge or that participant's entry is disqualified, during voting, that participant forfeits the tournament. In the event that two directly-competing entrants both forfeit, neither entrant will advance. A participant competing against a vacant slot is considered to have a “bye” and need not enter a photograph that week to advance. Entrants are solely responsible to submit their entries. Extensions will not be granted for any reason, including failure of the DPChallenge web site, or inability of any entrant or entrants to submit entries on a timely basis.

10. Due to the nature of the DPChallenge voting, winners of a round will not be known until the entries for the next round are due. Winners for each round will nonetheless be announced as soon as possible after DPChallenge voting is complete, but may be revised in the event of a DPChallenge disqualification up to one week after the results of the weekly challenge are posted.

11. The contest organizer may request that any entry by reviewed by DPChallenge for compliance with the DPChallenge rules, but DPChallenge is under no obligation to honor that request.

12. Prizes: One (1) grand prize of $100 USD will be paid to the overall winner of the tournament. One (1) first prize of $50 USD will be paid to the entrant eliminated in the final round. Two (2) second prizes of $25 USD each will be paid to the entrants eliminated in the semi-final round. If a forfeit or series of forfeits results in a vacancy at the semifinal or final round, that prize will not be awarded.

13. The tournament organizer may not enter or win.

14. All decisions of the tournament organizer are final.

I forgot to add... competitors and spectators can check out the "Predict It!" feature which allows you to post predictions of the tournament outcome. Good luck!

I'm screwed. Bear Music's portfolio is amazing, and he's seeded at 11. George Mason was seeded at 11. Damn.

lol. I'm a 6th seed going against 11th seeded Riggs who has won multiple ribbons to my none. Hopefully I can make this into an old fashion Texas shootout.

Everyone was broken randomly into 4 groups, and within each group, seeded by average.

I've edited the first post in the thread to include the Official Rules. Please read these if you haven't already. They include important information about things like tiebreakers.

One question I've been asked a lot is whether paired competitors both need to enter the same challenge. The answer is no -- you may each enter whichever of the two Exclusive Open challenges you like. Since the challenge is based on score and not ranking, it doesn't matter if you're in different challenges. In fact, it's technically possible to win a blue ribbon and lose in your bracket, if your opponent entered the other challenge and scored higher.

Not a bad idea! Hey Terry, what if you used this idea to add more donations?

Some type of betting pool, but most of the proceeds go to the MS walk?

Just a thought...

Impressive Terry, you put a lot of work into that, respect!

I thought about that, and really tried to think of a way to pull it off, but since it's technically gambling I can't do it. Pennsylvania (my home state) does allow raffles and such for charity, but a "small games of chance" permit is required and I would not have enough time to jump through the necessary hoops to get it. I'm also not sure what issues are involved with running a pool like that across state (and national) borders. Without jumping through the hoops required to ensure it was legal, I'd also violate section 4.4 of the Terms of Use if
I advertised it on the site.

Fortunately, the tournament itself is a skill tournament and not a betting pool, so none of these issues apply there.

If we enter both challenges, do you use our highest score? And, I agree, awesome work. Thanks for putting this together. It should be a blast.

It's not possible to enter both. DPChallenge only allows you to enter one or the other of the Exclusive Open challenges.

I'd be worried ;)

Just enter your best shot for whatever the challenge is that you choose (either of the two open challenges), and then hope for the best. That's all you can do

*edit* Oh yah.. and hope that neither of the challenge topics lends itself to portraitures ;)

I'm paired with jaywalk. I guess I'll just have to work real hard at submitting a really good entry. Hopefully it won't be too hard of one.
