I think that it would be nice if the row of marks were situated *above* the picture, and not below it.

Since every picture is a little different in size, the marks row moves around the screen all the time from picture to picture, and I need to hunt it with the mouse. All this mouse movement can be substantially reduced if the marks were above the picture: then the position of the marks would not change from picture to picture.

This may sound like a very minor thing, but at the end of voting for 200 pictures, my wrist and forearm are wishing for the optimisation that I proposed above.

I agree. I was disappointed to see the voting scale removed from the top, for the same reason.

The problem with this is that people can vote without scrolling down to see the whole photo, making it much easier for trolls to dish out low votes. Perhaps there is a happy middle ground somewhere

They did actually used to be above the picture but then people wouldn't even wait for the photo to load before they voted and moved on. So now you have to wait and view the whole darn thing!

personally I dont think that would be a good thing. With the marks below the image it ensures that the voter at least scrolled down to have the entire image presented to them - and hopefully that they gave the entire image a good look at. If the marks are above the image, and the image isn't of a subject matter that they are particulalrly fond of, this just shortens the time spent on it even more as they can score it however without ever having seen the full pic. jmho

darn typos - we need a spell check too

Was this change (the removal) a common request?
I saw the screen resolution poll, but it didn't occur to me that there were enough calls for "shortening the page".

Edit Does the site track the viewing/voting times?

Oh, I didn't realise they used to be above the picture...

I understand that you wanted to punish the trolls, but this alteration punished everybody else as well. Perhaps the troll problem can be addressed by accepting a vote only, say, 1-2 seconds after the picture was displayed?

How would anyone know this?

I mean... there is no way for the server to measure whether the browser has received all the data because of all the buffers between the application on the server end and the browser on the client end. So how could anyone know this, without sitting down and watching the person do the voting?

I find the constant movement of the voting scale to be rather irritating... it definitely makes it take longer for me to vote.

Since I'm on broadband pictures just "pop" onto my screen (it'd be physically impossible for me to vote before the picture had finished loading) and my screen resolution is 1280x1024 so I easily see the entire picture. Anyway, it would just make for a much nicer voting experience. And if the trolls are going to be trolls ... they're going to do it with or without a nice voting experience and they are in the minority anyway. So why not make the experience better for the rest of us?

I like keeping my mouse pointer at the bottom of the screen, that's my "home" position. So leave the voting bar right where it is please :>

We just like to punish everyone. It's fun.

Personally, I don't understand: the bar does not stay in one place, jumping up and down all the time, so what home position are you talking about? :) If it were homed in one place at the bottom, that would work for me just fine: I don't care whether it's at the top or at the bottom, as long as it doesn't move.

In any case, perhaps this could be made into a configurable preference?

We also moved the title below the photo to please the people who prefer to vote on the photo without the influence of the title. Having two voting scales seemed redundant (they used to be above and below the photo), and everything else (title, comment box, the new progress meters) are at the bottom anyway.

I like the way it was changed - especially moving the title as I like to see the image first.

typo checker PLEASE !!!

I don't like it. I don't care where the voting scale is -- if I'm voting I have to move to the correct number anyway. But moving the next and previous buttons was a sin -- requires much more effort to browse thru the challenge entries.
