last monday, the Richmond Times-Dispatch hosted a public square forum to discuss the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). there was a photographer there to shoot feature shots for the next morning's edition; my assignment was to shoot all the speakers. there would be a moderator and four microphones--all one had to do was fill out an information card, and they could speak.

it was a serious challenge, as there were people popping up all over the place. i was constantly moving around the room, trying to get an interesting angle on each speaker. some spoke for a couple minutes, some spoke for less than 30 seconds. not only did i have to get the shots, i had to get their names! there were about 90 people in the crowd, and altogether about 25 speakers. also, i didn't want them to look like athletic headshots, where they all look the same...

well, i got my shots, got the names, turned them in, and never saw anything...

until today, when i opened up the editorial section of the paper, and saw 20 of my shots all on one page!!!

It's nice to be published isn't it? I did a shoot for a music act, Adam Arcuragi for his new CD release. My photo is all over the web in regards to his publicity, and it was recently published in a Philadelphia newspaper. Front cover of the Metro, and again inside. I got 2 spots out of that one. Congrats on your 20 shots by the way.

yes, it is rewarding, and yes, it is work! it would have been very easy to have picked a seat and stayed in it and shot everything from that one spot, but i don't think that would have been that satisfying. it's tough when you're told to stay in one place, but dang, if you are free to move and choose not to? that's about as bad as having a digital camera and not taking more than 10 shots in an outing...

Excellent shots there. I love the way you've made every single one of them 'interesting' by changing the angle and composition.

Great candid journalism shots, clear, great contrast, sharp. Tell us what you used and setting, lens, flash etc.
