I've been thinking of getting a degree from NYIP, has anyone else taken the at home course and would you say it is worth the $. Are there any other comparitive courses available and also what kind of clout would the degree have in the industry? Thanks.

I'm actually putting together my first unit assignment today. It's a bit nerve wracking, but I've already noticed some change in the way I'm thinking when I'm shooting, and I've only finished the first unit's assignments. I'm sure that will only improve as time and units contiue to go through. I personally think it's worth it. I'm not sure how much clout this program will have in the industry, but I think in the process, you could probably build a portfolio built that will speak for itself. I guess I will see, though I'm not banking on turning pro any time soon.

I put my ex-wife through it. Very comprehensive courses. Well worth the money.

Are there any other schools that offer a course like this? or something similar?

I'm taking it and also think it's well worth the money. Quite thorough and interesting as well.

As for the clout part, I agree that it's going to be your "work" that will speak for you.

I searched all over for a course. About the only others that I know of are through local schools. We have the CIA (Colorado Institute of Art) here in Denver. Very pricey.

There used to be a Seattle Film Works course, but it was only materials. NYIP gives you homework for each unit. I just submitted my Unit 1 photos and comprehension quiz. Waiting for them to get back to me. Overall you do something like 18 pictures.

I'd say for the amount it costs, it's worth it. Send away for their catalog, and then wait a month (give or take) and they send you another offer to join. It's a bit cheaper, not much but a little. If you can afford it, get the whole thing at once. They give you some freebies when you do.

I've just started the courses. They seem well worth the money, and I couldn't find anything else to compare valuewise. If you are young and can borrow money and move for school, there are ones with higher reputations. In the end, your photography and marketing skills will be the deciding factors.
