Im putting up a website. Who do you guys use, and do you like it? I deffinatly want reliable, and dont need alot of space. Less than a gig, really. And I have my site in folders(sorted by GoLive) and I would like to be able to upload those folders instead of each page at a time, and not have to worry about re-coding once its up. Is that possible? And if so, who can I look at?

Thanks.

I love my GoDaddy hosting. I have a Virtual Dedicated Server, which would be more than you need. But, as far as service and reliability go, I've had no problems with them. Also, I use HalfPriceHosting.com for another site and it's been up without a single crash for 3 years.

I use ixwebhosting, they have always done right by me.

I have been using 1 and 1 going on 3 years now (free). I got in on a special they were having. They do have some great packages (as low as 0.99 per month) from just email to full blown stuff. I think the 99 cent is email, but 2.99 a month is another I just skimmed over for web. Check it out and see what fits.

I moved to Siteground recently and they are good from the web-site side. Cannot run an email system to save their lives but for web-hosting, it's a good package.

I use thunderhost.org for all of my sites, they had a few problems when they first opened up and when they changed owners but nothing major, and I haven't had any down time for atleast 4 or 5 months now.

Changed my mind about this one, NEVER USE THUNDERHOST.ORG in the last 2 weeks we have had more then 20 hours downtime and they don't reply to support tickets.

I'd highly recommend GoDaddy. Lots of space, cheap (5GB for $3.95 a month), good customer service. I've had 4 sites up with them over about 3 years (3 currently active) and never any problems.

I have good luck with www.x9hosting.com. They have great service and have only had 2 minutes downtime in the last 3 months. X9 Web Hosting is actually run by the former owner of Thunderhost.org. I was sick of the downtime from Thunderhost that i decided to switch hosts, and just by a fluke I saw one of X9 banners on a site and went to talk to the live support and sure enough it was Kevin that owned Thunderhost. I must say that he really did a great job with X9 and has added many features to this company.

So all in all that is my pick. :)

Scratch my recommendation. The host I was going to recommend just slapped me in the face and I won't be using them any longer.

edited to remove my recommendation.

I use DreamHost.
The first year I got a coupon code so it was only $10 (with domain!), and it worked out so well I ordered a second year at normal price (bit more than $10...).

Great host, very fast and reliable, allows shell access and a lot of other goodies. And loads of space and bandwidth, bandwidth should only be a problem if you give the wrong person access to one of your FTP accounts and they use it for a warez server.. then you just delete the account and call it good ;p

I use 1and1. I got in on promotion (3 yrs for free) but their rates are pretty good. As low as 2.99/month US.

Same here, and I have only had to use support once (requesting they turn something on for PHP and Gallery), got a response within an hour on email.
Check em out here!

Okay...here is a dumb question from a website dummie. I currently have my website through BetterPhoto....but in May I want to changeover to someone who can give me what I want.

Here is the list -

- Plenty of templates
- Easy to use and build
- Able to add music, text and of course images as I need
- The ability to include Artistic nudity
- Doesn't cost a bomb

Who do I go with?

Not a dumb question - I'm just not sure how you can get both. Most regular webhosts do not provide templates as far as I know, although the internet is certainly full of them and you could probably find some to adapt to your website. Having your own site would give you the flexibility to add what you want (music/nude images, etc.) but you'll have to have a bit of technical knowledge.

I know that a number of people use SmugMug and I know it's somewhat customizeable but I don't know to what extent. My issue with sites like that is that you're limited to exactly what they are providing - photo galleries in this case - and can't really expand from that like you can with your own space. However, if you don't know much about websites and don't want to know, sometimes they're just what you need.

If you're interesting in just finding some server space and setting up your own domain, etc. and you need help, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Thanks MK. I might just take you up on your offer...! I do have an eye on one site provider...but being a dummie in this matter it is a little overwhelming. I have about 8 weeks to decide what to do...so I will do a little more research first.

I have been using //www.freewebs.com for my website...paid members, I believe can have their own domain name and more space and bandwidth.

- It has a site builder (templates)
- I have used the site builder and its pretty intutive
- not sure about the music, but i don't see why you can't, images ofcourse, check these sites using there templates (not the best example but decent)
- i doubt they have any restrictions on the content you have on your webpage, its your space!
- hmm... not sure how it compares to other sites

Hello, I too have my site with BetterPhoto and I like it very much. Its reasonable, easy to use, your work can not be pirated, and does not cost an arm and a leg. Although, soon I will be setting up a more elaborated site. Then I will have to see where to go, however, I intend to keep the BetterPhoto too.

Ok dumb question. I am getting numerous calls and referrals for side jobs. Some from flower shops and just recently, a pet store. I would like to give them a business card but would not want to use my earthlink adddress. It doesn't look professional.

Can I use this to setup an email address and website? Please help again ;)

According to //www.surpasshosting.com/hostingplans.php you can. But you need a domain name also (which may be included).

I hope no-one minds me digging up this post...I have a question about the same subject...

I am getting ready to switch from Photosite to SmugMug (Pro). I will be able to transfer my domain name. (YAY!)

I am trying to find a new host so I can use my domain name for SmugMug but I am not exactly sure what I need. I just want people to be able to type in www.jralstonphotography.com to access my SmugMug site. There are some hosting sites that come with email, different storage sapces...I don't know. I am a webhosting dummy. Can someone tell me what exactly I should get?

If you're using smugmug as your host, all you'll need is a domain name. SmugMug is the place that provides your storage space, etc. GoDaddy.com is a cheap domain registrar.

So I just need a super basic domain name.....nothing fancy? Then I just set it up to link to SmugMug?
