Perhaps I didn´t understand the rules, sorry.
Anyway, congratulation for this marvelous photo.

Yea, we'd left 4/1/2002 as a default value on the submission page for that challenge to see just how many people WEREN'T changing the exposure date when they submitted photographs.
There were actually quite a few. We've since blanked out the field, so you must type a date.

I actually took the photo on the 14th during an excursion to coney island. I did not pay attention to the date field because... well... I was lazy. Sorry...

| Anyone that can capture a flying bird is not lazy in my book. I got the bright idea of trying to capture a bird flying around outside and mostly wound up with pictures of an empty sky. Congratulations are in order for a job well done. |

That was a truly nice picture. I thought the blurred background is what brought the picture to the top ( as in most portrait style photos)
I wonder, does having a Nikon DX1 help with a shot like that? ..:-) I'm just jealous...my wife won't let me have one :-( |

I also have tried to take pictures of birds in flight and they are a peice of cake, that is if you are in super wide mode so you can get the whole beach and you are not concerned about a beautiful, tightly cropped, in focus with a blurred background, amazing photo like yours. Usually I just get bits of wings in my photos.

The original photo is not as tight, but close. As you all have already said, it was very difficult to chase the bird. I actually tried to walk close to it so that it would take off... I had to chase a couple of them down before I got some decent shots. Feel free to stop by my photo gallery to check out my other pictures (more birds).

A camera with focus-tracking, and also a fast frame rate (D1x is 3 frames per second) and a large buffer (9 frames for the D1x) definitely will help a lot. The D1H is actually a better camera for this purpose, and is also cheaper, too! |
