Well, do you?
I'm thinking of turning one of my compys into a server and hosting my own sites? I have several up and running and the current host has gone down hill recently.
It'd be nice to bring everything "in house."

Unless you've got a dedicated line or space in a datacentre (co-location), I'd advise against hosting a server at home unless it's gonna be a very low traffic thing. I say this because most home connections just don't have the upstream bandwidth (as opposed to the large downstreams) to run a server effectively, especially if you're going to be hosting your images on there.

The problem is that a lot of ISP's frown on this and will stop you if/when they find them (some might be cool, but I doubt that is the norm).
Since most people have a very slow up-load speed compared to download, even if doable, it normally cannot deal with any real volume anyway.
Find another host :-) I have found they all tend to go downhill at some point, so it's like banks where a change is good every now and then. |

It's certainly doable - albeit with headaches that come with the territory, such as power glitches and limitted bandwidth.
Cable modems for example boast fairly slow upload speeds, so a self-hosted web site on a cable connection will be fairly slow.
Also, you have to deal with making the machine secure.
But, you have total control of the enviroment and features you wish to implement. I suggest going to //www.sourceforge.net and searchimg for AMP for Windows. AMP is an acronym for Apache, MySQL and PHP. This is the standard for open source web development.

oh alright, what's a good host you guys recommend that has reseller accounts ( I need because of my multiple sites), mySQL, PHP (not in safe mode), cPanel, %100 wiki support with Imagemagik. Anyone know?

I do host my own website on my own server. At first I started out on a cable connection for about 2 years. During that time I had a dynamic IP, so I used dyndns.org's Custom DNS to run DNS. This worked great. I'm fortunate to work at a webhosting/colocation company now, so I colocate my server there.
What kind of internet connection do you have? More importantly, what is your upload (not download) speed? What kind of hosting package do you have (shared hosting, VPS, dedicated server)? If this is just a small personal site, I think it is certainly worth a try if your upload speed is decent. I also think the hands on experience and control is well worth it.
Are you doing just a website, or are you doing databases, mail, DNS, FTP, SSH, POP3/IMAP, etc? It looks like you are hosted on a Linux server right now. Are you planning to setup a Linux server at home? If so, it should relatively easy to lock down if you go with a minimalistic approach to publicly available services.

I brought all our sites in-house at the company I work for. But the thing is, as other have said is bandwidth. We run a full T-1($450 or so per month) with a block of 40 static ip's and the DNS is handled by me.
If you wanted to use you cable connection (I have Cox at home) the problem becomes DNS or the www.whatever.com pointing to your IP number which is technically dynamic. Meaning that the service provider could change it anytime thus breaking your DNS (had you set it up to point at that IP). There are two ways to handle this, an IP number instead of a name I.E. //65.121.95.154 or you can use a Virtual DNS service like
//www.ulimit.com/en/vdns.php.
EDIT: dyndns.org's works great too!
But the right way to do it is set it up with static IP's and only your service provider will be able to tell you if they can and how much!
Good luck its fun and I like having total control but I bet to get a static line/ip to your house will be kind of pricey maybe 100-200 per month. If you get it cheaper let us know.

I just move to Siteground (Shameless Kickback Link). They will let you share the space/bandwidth across multiple domains as well which is nice. I almost went with GoDaddy because I hear good reviews about them and I know they have a reseller deal.
They have most of what you ask for but not Imagemagik as far as I know (I was thinking about hasseling them over that as well but they do have GD libraries installed). They were one of the few that were prepared to put me on a PHP5 server, so that is the main reason I went with them over GoDaddy who are still on PHP4.something.
Warning on Siteground: Careful with email setup as they are pretty average on that side IMO. I had a lot of hassle with email groups - minor deal in the scheme of things for me but aggrivating none the same. |

I would also highly recommend Siteground
They have excellent support and a quite cheap. Installing tons of things like chat rooms, ecommerce, photo galleries are just a 1 click operation and presto, they are up and running. Pretty amazing. I have had quite a few quesions and they have all been answered very quickly, with great support and help when i needed it. Two thumbs up.

that's what i did. I made the plunge this evening and went with Siteground. Man, i forgot how sketchy the world of web hosting is... i read soooo many review of various services and they all either seemed to over charge or over promise(and get bad reviews).
