is pro x actually worth the money or should i stick to trying to learn gimp 2? im not working with a huge budget and dont know a great deal about image software ( i'm a newbie at all of this ). is it worth it for a beginner to spend that much on a program?

I personally think it is worth it. I have been using Paintshop Pro since version 5. Even though it was by JASC until Corel shipped version X. Its at a nice pricepoint between other products like Photoshop etc.

I understand Photoshop's power (and I own PS: CS)but as far as intuitiveness I love Paint Shop Pro.

It gives you about 80-90% the power of Photoshop. But I would ask yourself how much you edit and if things like -RAW support,16bit,Filters,Scripts (even though Gimp runs scripts I think),etc. Would really help you or not.

They are also doing a $30.00 rebate until 2007 I belive so it comes to $99.99 + tax.

I suggest you download the trial version from www.corel.com and the free version of Gimp, and see for yourself which suits you best.

I started out with Paint Shop Pro 7, and recently upgraded to PSP X. I'd say stick with the GIMP until you feel that your photography has outgrown it. You may never need to spend the bucks for another program.

I downloaded Gimp 2.2 and spent a tremendous amount of hours working with it and got little to show for it. I know that the learning curve is steep, but I found it to be more like a learning brick wall and I just kept hitting it. I did buy the only book I could find with some guidance for Gimp called GIMP The Official Handbook by CoriolisOpen Press. I did learn a little, but it was still over my head. I tried a bunch of free trial programs and loved Paint Shop Pro X. After a thorough 30 day trial I bought it. Its very well designed. It can be used a very basic level to dramatically improve photos. As your interest grows you'll find that PSPX has a lot of depth and breadth. As DustDevil stated above, PSPX has about 80-90% of the power of PhotoShop CS.

I'd also recommend Corel Photopaint X for a budget software. You can often pick up version 9 with Corel Draw for as low as $50 if you find the Corel Draw Essentials pack.

I *tried* Gimp. Now I know why it's free.

I bought CS2. Nice program, but not worth the money for what you use. In fact, I haven't used it in months and it's not even installed on my new computer.

I got/use/love PSPX. Does everything I need and more, but not near as hard to learn as either Gimp or CS2.
