(or multiple ribbons)...
1) Move to Iceland (you're pretty much guaranteed one ribbon-winning shot on every outing, whether during the 'golden hour' or not).
2) Put a brown mop on your head, put on a sad face, and sit in a room with some weird lighting and weird objects strewn about (This works particularly well if you are a young male between the ages of 16 and 20, otherwise, just try and turn your head from the camera).
3) Move to Thailand (or just find a group of Thai people huddled together somewhere in your hometown. Open up your aperture, effectively blurring the background, and toss them a dollar or two a piece and have them either smile and play, or look sad and desperate).

I know, these are things we can all do. It used to be much more complicated to get a ribbon. We actually used to have to go find flowers and have a drop of water somewhere in the photo in order to place in the top 3. Now it's much more simple. Good luck in getting your ribbon. If you follow one of my three simple steps, you'll be well on your way.

You sound sour. I don't know if a ribbon is really that important. I think I don't have to mention that you take great photos, why should you care about taking the 2nd or 6th place? All are respected in the hight you finish regulary.
From a distant view, there's some truth in ribbons go to clishes for months. If there's something like stock art photography, we all know it. But the voters are ourselves, why not to change the schemes? |

Go to the fabric store, walk over to the ribbon bins and buy some pretty blue ribbon ;) |

Well I opened this thread and began to read with pen in hand, ready to take notes. However! Now I have even more questions!

LOL... at this point, I'm wondering if Iceland has actual people in it other than photographers. :) It seems like it's just a land with tons of gorgeous scenery. Oh, and what exactly is the 'golden hour'? And what time zone is that 'hour' in? I mean... if it's like 5-6pm, would I count it in EST or something else? Iceland-time? GMT...? ...

Okay, well I can't move to Thailand. How does one go about locating huddled Thai people? How can I be certain to have Thai people, rather than Chinese or Vietnamese? I'm not very good at distinguishing between people from different areas.

Honestly, this tutorial is very confusing!!! Maybe if you gave it some pictures... and made it more step-by-step... A little flash video might help also. And a guarantee is always important!

I agree whit you completely most ribbon are not good at the moment I am hoping sight will turn to photographic result and whit-out black background.
If picture have more than 50 black whit out detail in it I give it 1 points, not a picture in my mind, still there are few exception.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "more than 50 black whit out detail"? Do you mean more than 50% black? As in the background? :) |

absolute rubbish. a face coming out of shadows is as much a photo as taking a photo of a landscape. Yes is is different, but please dont [say] that they arent good photos. That is your limited mind!!!

I agree with alex.. this is one of the more misinformed, confusing things I've ever heard anyone on this site say. But if that's how you feel, by all means.. at least you're consistent.

| I agree on both counts with you Artyste. IceRock's voting style is certainly extreme, but he is consistent and thus is entitled. I've been stung by the iceman on more than one occasion, but I've learned to take it in stride. It actually made me really sit up and notice when I got a "nice photo" comment from him. Well, actually the comment was "good picture but picture is tilted", but I only saw "good picture". ;) |
