If it's not too much trouble, care to share with us:

1. how long have you been in photography?
2. when was the first time you took a photo (film or digital)
3. have you used film before?
4. how long have you been using digital?
5. What are your cameras? (in chronological order)
6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?

Thanks. Just thought we can see where everyone comes from :)

For the no real reason, I'll post first :P

1. Since I knew what a camera was for (hooray for disposables!).
2. Um, like age 6?
3. Yes, but not to any great effect.
4. Got my very own digital camera 3 years ago, but used mom's (which became mine) for 2 years prior.
5. Fujifilm Finepix 2600Z, and yes it sucks. Next to no manual features.
6. Certain self-nudes that will not be shared on the internet ;)

I'm far more interested in seeing profile tidbits from the *REAL* photographers :D

1.)Been 'in' photography for about 5 yrs now

2.)first film photo I took would have been when I was a kid. First digital would have been 5 yrs ago.

3.) used film a bit when I was a kid - but had no idea what I was doing.

4.) 5 yrs

5.) hmmm , might have been an old brownie, then polaroid instamatic, P&S of some sort cant remember, then a Dimera digital that I won, followed by the HP315, the Canon Powershot G1, the Canon Digital Rebel, and now the Canon 20D

6.) not sure how to answer that one. I guess maybe the Prickett Dam photo I did for reflectins challenge, that is now being used for efforts to protect the dam/resevoir from the developers.

1. I got my first camera in 3rd grade. It was a kodak 110 something... Nothing special. I remeber you had to use a one-use bulb flash...

2. Probably as a toddler... Evidently I was always in everything... lol but then I took a lot of pictures when I got that camera in 3rd grade. The first time I 'planned' a shot was some macro stuff I did in 8th grade.

3. Yup.

4. Our family got a digital camera in 1997. It was a 1.3M Olympus. I still think it produced a great quality image... I got my first digi in 2000. It was a HP 315. It was 2M of pure bliss. Until someone droped it and busted the screen on the back. =[

5. Kodak 110 thinger, Pentax SLR (not sure of model), HP 315, Canon Elan II, Canon 300D, Canon 10D... next, who knows? =]

6. hmmm. good question. I've been published many times, and people seem to enjoy my work, but honestly, I do my photography for me. My favorite part about photography is that I can freeze an instant of time. And if I can do that in such a way so as to actually capture a moment, and capture details that were easy to miss in that instance, that is the ultimate achievement for me. Wow. I'm such a sap.

1. how long have you been in photography?
About a year and a half or so.

2. when was the first time you took a photo (film or digital)
I have no idea, I'm going to guess maybe 12 or 13 years old?

3. have you used film before?
Yeah, I took two classes in high school on film photography and film developing.

4. how long have you been using digital?
Since 2002 or 2003 I think.

5. What are your cameras? (in chronological order)
First camera was a Panasonic DMC-LC33 which i sold and now I have a Panasonic DMC-FZ4. I really like Panasonic's stuff and when I finally upgrade to a digital SLR, I'm going to buy a small Panasonic P&S to go with it.

6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?
I have no idea. I really don't have any achievements in this field yet as I am just starting out, but we'll see what the future holds.

1. Dunno. Don't have enough fingers and toes.

2. When I was about eight. It was of my mother and the cat. The cat was trying to escape.

3. Yeah. I used to love sitting on the floor of the closet loading my own 35mm cartriges.

4. About two years.

5. Brownie Hawkeye, Kodak Instamatic, Contax (?), Pentax H3V (I could shoot at 1/1000 of a second!), 3 or 4 other Pentaxes (can't remember the model numbers), Canon Elan IIe, something digital that my mother got on QVC (It was supposed to go on a key chain. I never did find the viewfinder.), Canon PowerShot S60 (Still have it. Still love it.), Canon 20D

6. Haven't had it yet.
02/17/2006 03:37:06 AM · #10
1. About 2.5 years since I started playing with my Mom's Pentax film SLR.

2. First time I ever really took a photo I remember was when I wen't to camp when I was maybe 10 or 12 with an awful disposable. I might even still have them somewhere.

3. Yep, with the Pentax experimenting on my own and then in a couple classes through school which were all film.

4. about two years, since I got a Powershot G5 for christmas.

5. Little bits of that light sensitive paper you put things on and then stick in the sunlight, Disposables, Powershot G5, EOS Digital Rebel, Tin Can Pinhole, Holga Medium Format, Canon S410, Minolta X-700, Yashica GSN

6. Probably what I feel is the first 'good' picture I ever took which was an amazing sunset with my G5.

Oh, and Crayon....wheres yours?!
02/17/2006 03:50:26 AM · #12
Oh sure, here's mine

1. it has always been just a hobby for me, but I guess only for a year since I really got hooked.

2. when I was about 5(?) and begged dad to let me press the shutter on his SLR :p

3. yes, back in those days, only film is available

4. 6 years ago - but it was one of those ultra-tiny japanese digicams the size of a matchbox, had a load of fun with it eventho it's only 16MB of internal memory, hehe. It was an interpolated 2MP camera, but looking at the pics, I feel it takes better photos than my camera-phone!

5. Seriously I cant really remember, it's been too long (I was too young to remember?). But only recently back into digital with my current Fuji.

02/17/2006 04:52:30 AM · #14
1. Been in it seriously for about 4 years now, but the first time I was hooked was nearly 20 years ago. (Hobby went by the wayside for a while, not least lack of $)

2. Probably when I was about 10 (25 years ago). I got my first camera when I was 12.

3. Oooh yeah! I did a photography subject one year in high school where we developed and printed our own B&W work. And even with a digital camera now, I will still continue to shoot film - being an IT professional and interested in technology doesn't stop me from loving the way film works. :)

4. Only six weeks ago!

5. 110 camera, can't remember what brand
Minolta SRT-101 (still have it, but only use it for exposures longer than one hour)
Minolta Dynax 505si (= Maxxum HTsi)
Minolta Dynax 5 (Three altogether - got two more when the 505si and my first 5 were stolen. Trying to sell one, will keep and use the other)
Yashica-Mat 124G - medium format 6x6 (Still in use)
Konica-Minolta Dynax 5D

6. Seeing someone impacted by a confronting photograph I'd created.

1. how long have you been in photography?
July 2005 - something stirred the interest and i pulled out some of my father's old equipment.

2. when was the first time you took a photo (film or digital)
I had a little 110 in grade school, never did anything memorable with it. My father was an avid amateur photographer, so i had some exposure.

3. have you used film before?
Yes, and still do.

4. how long have you been using digital?
First digital was an HP 315, obtained several years ago. Never did much with it. My husband took it to Afghanistan last year, leaving me with the opportunity to get a newer digital with manual controls.

5. What are your cameras? (in chronological order)
hmmm... the old Kodak 110, a Pentax film SLR, manual Nikon SLR, HP315, Nikon n80, Nikon 8800, Nikon D70s

6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?
every time i learn a new concept and get that "aha!" moment

1. how long have you been in photography?
Since March of 2004 as far as a serious hobby is concerned.

2. when was the first time you took a photo (film or digital)
I had a Kodak Disc Camera I used in junior high...guess that was my first "real" camera. ;)

3. have you used film before?
I have had TONS of rolls of film developed at Wal-Mart (birthday snaps, family stuff, vacations) but nothing more serious than my treasured family memories.

4. how long have you been using digital?
Since 1999

5. What are your cameras? (in chronological order)
Since seriously deciding this was a hobby for me, I have had a Sony DSC-P32, a Kodak DX-6490, a Canon 300D, and currently, a Canon 10D.

6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?
I think that having 365 pictures of mine chosen as favorites by other people is really special to me...having other people like the images I create, and like them enough to want to publicly acknowledge that fact, is worth a lot more than ribbons or P-O-T-D stats for me.

This is great! I love ice-breakers. It's fun to see where others are coming from!!

1. how long have you been in photography?
I really started enjoying photography when I lived in Germany and had an Olympus P&S. I then got a Canon Rebel film SLR, but practically went broke. Had a digital dinosaur and took TONS of snapsots. Finally came into my own when I got my XT 06/28/2005 - when my daughter was 6 months old. I haven't looked back since.

2. when was the first time you took a photo (film or digital)
My first camera that my parents bought me. I can't remember how old I was. I know it was back in the 80's. It was one of those Kodak cameras that you loaded the little film disc into. Anyone remember those? I know Laurie does:-)

3. have you used film before?
Yes, and spent LOTS of money on developing and have more picture albums than I know what to do with!!

4. how long have you been using digital?
I got my first digital camera in 2000.

5. What are your cameras? (in chronological order)
That Kodak camera *film (don't have anymore)
Another P&S *film - can't remember the brand (don't have anymore)
Olympus P&S *film - husband still uses
Fuji digital camera *digital (wasn't even 3 mps! - don't have anymore)
Canon Rebel XT SLR *film - (don't have anymore)
Canon Digital Rebel XT 350D *digital - BEST CAMERA I HAVE EVER OWNED

6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?
A tie between two:
When I won a 3rd place ribbon in a photography contest at the State Fair of Texas
When I sold my first print

Why not....

1. how long have you been in photography?
- More seriously since 1990 or so when I got an SLR but I always had cameras growing up and since I have ALL the negs, I suspect the real answer is since the mid-late 70's (or maybe that's a pack-rat thing). It's not been an adiction until the digital SLR.

2. when was the first time you took a photo (film or digital)
- For some reason, I remember getting my first camera (old one my father had) around 1977 - clearly this was not digital :).

3. have you used film before?
- Er... Yes. I still do actually but certainly it's dropped in volume since the first digital and it dropped a lot more when I swapped to a digital SLR.

4. how long have you been using digital?
- Got my first digital P&S in 2000 but the 20D feature/price point made me go the d-SLR path almost 9 months ago (yeah, I heard the voices and everything but the film SLR killing batteries while turned off was the final straw).

5. What are your cameras? (in chronological order)
- 1) Kodak Brownie. It was 127 roll film and a lot of fun.
- 2) Brownie Box - This is still around my parents place somewhere.
- 3) Kodak Hawkeye - The oldie 110 film, talk about small sensor :-)
- 4) Canon 600/630 SLR (35mm) - pull battery out when not in use.
- 5) Canon S230 digital P&S.
- 6) Canon 20D.

6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?
- I know this is daft but it's never been an external thing to me like a number of the other responses - I guess when I look at the maybe half-dozen pics over the years that I really like and remember the thoughts and situtation at the time of taking the pic and knowing I created something that would otherwise not exist. Interesting question, made me think for a bit....

1. how long have you been in photography?
Got the bug somewhere between 1968-1970 after spending time in the darkroom watching my Dad develop & print technical B&W's of products at his work.

2. when was the first time you took a photo (film or digital)
Would have to be around 1962 (film obviously). I remember my Dad letting me take some pics with his Rolleiflex Twin-Lens Reflex.

3. have you used film before?
In what way? LOL
Countless rolls, slides, bulk-loaded my own, had my own darkroom at age 14-15,
still have all my color darkrom equipment too - Bogen, Nikkor, Illford, etc..

4. how long have you been using digital?
Since about mid-2000.

5. What are your cameras? (in chronological order)
Voigtlander 35mm VITO II (still have it)
Contax RTS w/5fps motor drive & all Zeiss lenses (all stolen - dearly miss the 50mm f/1.4)
Couple point & shoot 35mm's
Yashica FX-2 35mm SLR (stil have it)
Sony Mavica FD-88 (still have it)
Olympus E-10
Canon 350D (still have it - haha)

6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?
Tough to single out.
* Documenting the entire season of the #1 High School wrestling team in California in 2004 through their record-setting State Championship along with a half-page full color pic on front page of the newspaper.
* A shot used on a Joan Embry (San Diego Zoo) fund-raiser postcard.
* 7 of my pictures used in the Triest Exhibition in Italy.
* Prints sold, Favs marked, etc.

None of it remarkable really, just clicks.

Minolta SLR (forget which body)

6. what is your proudest achievement in photography?

Sad to say, but I never really had too many early achievements, I was more focused on other things, and never had good teachers (I now know). I've learned more about technicals and composition in my months here that I ever did in high school or from my parents. Even from my mom who took years of black and white photo classes. I've even learned that some of the stuff I had learned was wrong, or so incomplete as to be worthless.

I guess it would have to be our first up front paying photoshoot recentely, where we totally floored them with what we were able to produce with our little camera that could. I hope to achieve much more than that in the future.
