Sometimes the best tool is a hammer.

most of the shooting ive done in the last year has been at punk rock shows in oakland...

one of the things i do know about my camera is that you can hit someone on the head with it in a mosh pit and still take pics.

those cybershots are durable

Still love JASC Paint Shop Pro...sure it Adobe but at less than $100 in some markets with all the stuff it can do it really is worth it. I've actually used it longer than I've even known photography, back in my photo editing and graphic fun days.

I was going to link to jasc.com and corel.com but my DNS server at work is not working correctly. You can get a fully running 30 day trial of Paint Shop online.

Since you're new to editing, might want to try checking out some of the tutorials here on the site. Just go to the top menu bar under 'Learn'.

Adobe also sells Photoshop Elements for about $100 -- it has plenty of Photoshop's functionality for photo editing, and gives you a headstart on learning the interface in case you ever decide to upgrade to the full program. If you have a newer Mac it comes with iPhoto.

For photo browsing, checking EXIF info, and some simple editing, IrfanView (for Windows only) is great.

I'd say try to get a copy of Photoshop Elements, as GeneralE has suggested. It's pretty powerful. I know my Canon 300d came with a copy of it. I don't think my d70 did. I have photoshop CS, but installed elements anyway to see what it was all about, it's quite good.
