I was wondering what everyone used to store all their photos while they are out in the field. I currently have a 1 GB and a 512 MB CF Card.

My options for storing more:

Laptop: $1200
More CF Cards: $500

Are there any cheaper options out there. I here so many talk about portable hard drives but I assume I would need a laptop to be able to transfer photos from camera to hard drive.

Are there any other options?

I use a 60GB iPod. You can buy a $30 piece to plug either a USB card reader or your camera into it and transfer the images... There are many other brands of portable HDDs, but I don't know anything about them...

A stand-alone storage device would serve just as well as a laptop and reduce the number of CF cards needed. The have harddrives in them and card readers -- just put the card in and it stores the contents to disk. B&H have several that vary in capability and price -- but one of them is likely to fit your needs. link

there is the Archos AV, it has a built in CF reader, a harddisk (20-120GB) big LCD and it plays music, videos, it can be used as a audio recorder (built in mic) and a portable HDD :)

and it's cheaper than an iPod, works better, looks better, and feels better :)

I am looking for a stand alone hard drive with a built in reader. 20 - 40GB of storage should be plenty I would think.

I plan to buy one of these. Have not used it but seems to get great reviews for speed & power usage - although there is NO revire screen if that is important.

Edit: It's basically a laptop hard drive in a box with a little firmware to download from the built in reader. You can get it empty (got any spare laptop drives?) or pre installed with drives of various sizes.

I have and love the Epson P-2000. It has a 40G hard drive and a beautiful screen for reviewing your images. Best of all, it reads RAW files as well as jpegs (I shoot almost nothing but raw).

The nice thing is that I can shoot all day long with just two cards - one in the camera and one in the P-2000. So when one fills up, I just put it in the P-2000 and copy it to the hard drive. Then switch again when the next one fills up.

David Terry that is one beautiful hard drive.

But the option of $450 for that one or

A Wolverine 40GB for $189.

I will take the Wolverine. I really don't need a pretty one. Just one that stores my photo when shooting in RAW.

I was thinking of buying one of that, but I'm not sure because it's quite expensive. How about the battery? How long that it lasts if you review images?
