I have been considering getting a Canon 9900 (it's about $410 now). But thinking about it a bit more, I don't think I'll need the large format very often, and I'm wondering if I could save money and office space by going smaller.

So I'm wondering what is the best comparable regular width Canon printer for photos? I see Canon has revamped their entire line since I last looked. I don't need any features (e.g., printing from the camera) other than superb printing of photos up to 8x10. (I have a laser for text.)

Recommendations? (BTW - I won't consider an Epson--I had two of them and they were unreliable; right now I have a Canon S750 (3 color + black ) and it's been very reliable, and I don't think I've had to unclog a head or even clean one in 2 or more years.)

Thanks Justin--it looks pretty good, though it's actually only about $80 less than the 9900. Still, it would save some room on my peripherals desk!

HP Photosmart 8750. Gets pretty good reviews. Does offer larger format, but on sale for $399 these days.

Thanks Brent, Mark and Justin.

Any other sage advice before I decide?

If you can still find it look at the Canon i960. It is the little brother to the i9900. I have them both and have been very happy with each. The i960, if you can still find one for sale, will go for around $150-160. Takes the same ink carts as the i9900 but six instead of eight. I believe it was replace with the Pixma series but I bet you could still find one new out there.

I just ordered a PhotoSmart 8750 the other day from NewEgg for 389.99. I have heard that it is an awesome printer but maybe a bit of an ink-hog. I have been using an HP DeskJet 1220C for years and have been very pleased with it. It will probably still be my primary office printer but it is wearing and having difficulty properly feeding photo papers without manual attention.

We use the Canon Pixma 6220D and have been nothing but amazed at its print quality.

I think there's an abundance of really good printers out there these days.

I just bought the canon ip5000 (got last years model because the ink is far cheaper) the print quality and speed is great. I'd highly recomend it.

We have a Canon i960 that prints GORGEOUS prints. It uses 6 ink tanks, each are about $11. Check out the reviews on it on amazon or epinions. You could probably pick one up for under $150 nowadays.

I have always owned Epsons in the past, but the last one I had (1280) had the dreaded clogged head problem, so I gave HP a try. I picked up the 8750 and the prints are great, was up and running very quickly and it has built in ethernet for network printing. So far very happy...is a bit of an ink hog but I use a cheap (free) all-in-one printer for the day to day stuff.

Forgot to mention that if you like B&W prints the HP 8750 is one of the best.
