02/08/2006 12:46:23 AM · #2
so why did i get that many ones
02/08/2006 12:48:06 AM · #3
rhetorical question right?
02/08/2006 12:48:09 AM · #4
i got a lot of ones too.

i think you got so many because your photo didn't really have much to do with romance. but hey, like i'm one to talk.

But isn't romance something to be altered depending on who it is? Maybe I feel that being tied up is romantic....

of course, but i think people voted on what THEIR idea of romance was. :)

but i'm guessing the voters didn't... you have to keep the voting 'mob' in mind when shooting for DPC...

I know...that's romantic in an odd sort of way...

Also, shouldn't people be more open minded when voting...shouldn't they vote on things like technically correct, composition, etc...

uhhh... once again ;-) I have yet to figure out why it got so many 1's...

My guess is "gratuitous use of nudity".

You've also entered the realm of perceived sexual abuse here.. and abuse against women. Nobody could know it was a woman taking the shot, and I doubt many thought it might have been a self-portrait. Even out of those that did, I can imagine many found it to be in poor taste.. given the fact that abuse against women is a very real and scary thing.

So you got a lot of 1s because you have very controversial subject matter, a subject that only ties into the challenge on a personal level and misses with most of the voters, and, to be frank, a photo that doesn't have a large amount of technical prowess.

You also got a lot of higher scores.

It's all about mass appeal.

This shot simply didn't have it, and as a kick in the teeth, was of a subject matter that *many* people find offensive.

I never thought about the sexual abuse thing...wow...nice addition there. But I would have to say that it is technically better than the some of the other shots that placed higher than me!

Hehe.. probably. I find that with all my submissions too :) However, something that is controversial or offensive will always score worse than something that isn't.. technical proficiency aside.

Do not feel too bad. DPC just runs away from these images even when presented with superb workmanship. There is just a limited artistic view on what romance is and its many rivulets of variations. Too progressive for some and too crude for their feelings.

About 60% of the voters consider bondage in bad taste and they go ballistic and seek at once to express their view in their votes. They are so emphatic that they one it to death as if to say, "how dare you?" However, note that not all do

Angela (Angie? Which do you prefer?) You recieved 48. That was 12 percent of your votes. You still received a score of 4.36. I would call that a triumph. You moved your viewers. Is photography all about happy happy? Sometimes not... I tried to vote on this one but refrained several times. Why? I could not see romance in this shot. Sexual gratification yes... Romance no... I was a little confused trying to figure out the differance...

You got a 4 from me. I bumped you down for not meeting challenge. Mt opinion. While I agree that romance is subjective; I still think it's a two-way thing.

Your picture is powerful, sexual and evocative. This will bring out strong reactions (one way or the other) from the audience. Romance, however (IMO), is not about power or sexuality.

In a different challenge this shot would have rocked.

I liked this one, it got an 8 from me. For me the image wasn't about abuse towards women. It instead was about the expected notions of romance. The roses, the chocolates, the walks together on the beach, all of the notions of romance that we are EXPECTED and socialised in to following and agreeing with. That romance is bound (No pun intended) within a feminine concept that has certain rules to follow.

This is pretty much how I felt also when I saw this photo. I also gave it a 4 although I thought about moving it to a 5 since the only issue for me was the theme of the challenge.

I liked it. Gave you a 6 for creativity and execution. Anyway people is abusing with ones.

I know quite a few girls that would think that this would fit perfectly their idea of romance.

I thought I had left a comment, but apparently not. I was apparently one of seven nines as it was a well composed shot with an excellent model (nice glance through the hair) and perhaps most importantly, it wasn't the same thing everyone else was shooting.

Accompanied by your comments the image could start to make some sense, but by itself among the others it looked really out of place; I saw no romance there and I thought: "here is someone (skilled) that likes to shoot sex stuff and thought a shocking image will draw interest even if it is not about the challenge theme".
I even perceived mockery of the romance theme and gave you 1.
An image may be for those whoo see it quite a different thing from what the photographer intended, but in this case you should have imagined the result...

forgot to add: I really like your portfolio! (this is why I tried to give an honest answer in the message above)

I agree, the image probably made people cringe. I'm willing to bet that if the subject had been tied up in bed with a satin rope with more of a seductive look it would have scored a lot higher. Someone in the position your subject is in just screams abuse but put them in bed and it appears more romantic...I'm not saying this is "right" but that's what I see.
