i have read the tutorial on "creating printable images", and understand everything prefectly. i have been using this method with success for a little while now. however, at the bottom of the tutorial i just recently noticed that it said that you could write an action in the full version of photoshop to perform this task. my question is not with resampling, but with photoshop. i have never messed around with the actions in photoshop and was wondering how exactly this is done.

thanks

This is one I think I can answer. Making an action is rather simple actually, but I don't have PS at work so I'll do my best from memory. In the actions window, it's possible to right click and create a new action. Once you've named you're action there should be a little record/play button in the window when you have it selected. Just hit the record button( red circle I believe ) and PS will record every mouse click you make. Once you've completed the task you want to automate stop recording and test it. Sorry for the vague details, I'll try to give more from home when I can actually walk through it.

I haven't read the tutorial but will continue on what narliss described. When you create actions, you can always edit and fine-tune them and delete unnecessary steps, or add new steps to it. One thing to be aware of is the flexibility you can give to actions by putting in 'Stops', ideally with a friendly message on why the action stopped and what you are supposed to do. With 'stops' you can, in essence, customize every action by undoing the automated aspect for that particular step, and then resume the automated action after this step is completed. For instance, instead of having the action resize every image to 640x480, you could put in a stop and allow to manually put in the resize ratio that you prefer for that particular image.

Once you have created the action with the record and stop buttons, you can then play it forever. Actions are enormous timesavers for routine tasks that you do often.

Another thing to be aware of is the effect of actions on the history palette. Although pushing the play button on an action may seem only as a single step, the history palette, no surprise really, records every step within the action as a step in the history palette. In other words, if you try to undo a 30 step action from your history palette, you are out of luck.

Hope i haven't confused you.
