Parental Controls:

Pros-
Children would not see what parent may feel is offensive.

Co-workers and boss won't get upset or fire you.

You will not have to look at what you feel is offensive.

Cons-
Censorship is evil and not what democracy is about.

Once censorship is put in place it is like a snowball and just keeps growning larger and building speed, taking on a life of its own.

Easier said than done, see any of Gordon's posts.(technically speaking)

What general standards will photos be censored by? And this has to be very specific with absolutely NO EXCEPTIONS! How many criteria must be met, all or just some? This is the sticky part.

Yes, before anyone asks, I am a parent, of 3 young boys. I "censor" what they see and hear, when I can.

Lay all your fears at rest.

It's quite doubtful that the site is going to change that much. There are not enough photos presented on this site that are any more 'evil' than the typical primetime TV show to warrant going to any extreme measures.

Yes, if there were images of people's brains being blown out with guns on a regular basis, etc, i could see the need for something. but there isnt even CLOSE to that.

we do have nude flags, and that's because you can't see nudes in daily life without going through a hoop or two. But we already have banned all genital nudity. So it could never get that risque, even with the nudes we allow.

I would request that everyone uses the honor system and labels a link 'nudity ahead' so no one is surprised. But aside from that, not much more is going to happen.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble.

There are photos as parents we don't like our kids seeing and yet we have no control over them. There are also photos that we are just complete turned by and don't really want to see them again. We really need a "Parental Control" were as we vote we can check to have the image hidden. Why everyone thinks it the nudes that have to be hidden is beyond me...most nudes are very tasteful here and I don't have the nudes hidden but I would love the option to hide photos that I just don't deem fit for my child to see if he is around.

Ya know what i think your kid needs more than this "parental control" option? His Mommy. Why don't you spend less time bitching about what he's seeing and take him to the park. Turn off the PC! I'm sure he'll appreciate that alot more than this option he knows nothing about.

I addressed your suggestion point by point and seem to have given it rather more thought than many people posting in this thread. If you'd care to address the issue rather than drifting off into personal attacks we might actually make some progress.

Stop telling me what to do! My little boy does not go neglected and you have no right to even insinuate such a thing! He was not home today, he was spending the day with his Grandfather like I should even have to justify that to you!

My little boy likes to look at the photos here and talk about them. He really loves looking at the animal photos and I just want the site to be more friendly for him when he is here. Although he is never here without me being right beside him but it would be nice to know I won't run into a photo I don't want him to see on the home page or in thumbnails!

Woh! calm down... in thru the nose out thru the mouth.
The only reason a person gets on the defensive it to protect something. My gawd woman I was just trying to tell you to spend some quality time with your kid outside the house. Nobody said anything about neglect... only you did.

I shouldn't have had to justify my day in front of the computer which thanks to you has now turned into me crying cause all I ever wanted was this site to be a safer place for him when he is home I didn't need what you said to me just makes me realize how cruel people can be at times!

Seems most are in agreement here. If you'd like to continue this, or some other off-topic discussion, please do so in the rant section.

Adding rows to an existing table or a new table means that either will "get quite large over time". Even if every image was tagged by 100 people (or say a tagging rate of 1%) we're only talking about a few Mbs of storage.

This would slow the performance of the site as a whole, possibly quite significantly.

Any additional queries, were one to believe they were a bottleneck in the first place, could be "factored out" of the majority by partial inclusion of relevant data in existing queries.

No, I don't think the database storage/performance argument holds much water. I think there's considerably more work involved in the interface, but it's not a monumental task by any means. Still, it's probably not time well spent.

Would such this change really add that much value to dpc? I seriously doubt it, not until the Disney buyout anyway.

Anyway, like mag says, it ain't changing anytime soon.
