So..umm...don't look at sites where there's a possibility of seeing someone's tits?

What drew and langdon really need to code for this site is a 'snoop sensor'. Anytime your computer detects a boss, coworker, or child approaching the computer, the system should automatically shut down your browser and bring up a spreadsheet with some statistical graphs on it.

Seriously folks... This website is not responsible for your own work or family ethics. If you play on the internet at work, you are taking your own risks and it's your own fault if you get busted for it. Same idea with your kids... It's your own responsibility to govern what they see.

And how do we hide posts containing language you just used when the boss is walking by?

Do you get my point? Anything can be construed as offensive. First OSS wanted controls against nudes. Then she switched this to drugs and guns, probably around the time she submitted the macro of her own nipple.

And, as Karen and mk and others have pointed out repeatedly, the answer really is simple: take personal responsibility.

Mk is right. JUST DON'T LOOK at pics when your children are around, it's that simple. If someone should get fired because they are surfing the internet at work when they should be working, that is their responsibility. If someone is home and looking at nude pics when there children are around, that is their responsibility. It's just that simple.....ya know.

I'm not sure everyone is aware of what is involved (from a programming standpoint) with this request.

Off the top of my head, this would require:

- An additional data structure (table) be developed to allow users to individually flag photos to hide. The current system only requires one additional row in an existing table. This table would get quite large over time.

- A query to this table every time ANY page on the site that contains thumbnails is displayed. Currently, many of these pages (such as the results pages) are cached so they load faster. Such a change would mean those pages would need to be dynamically generated each time they are displayed. This would slow the performance of the site as a whole, possibly quite significantly.

- At some point have to view the photo to decide it was offensive and hide it. If you are doing this at work, or while your kids might be around, this does not even solve your problem.

- Ultimately, if the content of DPChallenge is likely to get you in trouble at work, you should NOT view it at work. Very simply, if someone sees a bunch of DPChallenge URL's in your history or at the firewall and goes to the site to investigate, they will be viewing a default version of the page (that shows everything) and not the site under your settings, so you's likely get in trouble no matter how much you blocked.

Speaking only for myself and not as a representative of the DPChallenge, if someone is the type of person who would blame DPChallenge if they get in trouble for viewing the site when they are not supposed to, I would rather they not use the site at all.

All in all I'm seeing a lot of coding work resulting in a marginal benefit for a small percentage of the users and reduced performance for the majority. Not somthing I can really support.

I would also like to read about the reimbursement fund...you know, so that when I get fired from my job because I've been goofing off on dpc, any proceeds from dpchallenge or dpcprints come to me so that I can continue to support myself, even though dpc is ruining my life.

Thanks Terry, I do have that option set. Two of the nudes on the front page are hidden. This morning I clicked on a linked photo that was a nude, I'm not sure why it wasn't hidden. Does the setting only pertain to challenge submissions?

Yes! You're right! I'll have to remove titsandass.com from my favorites.

The setting only hides thumbnails. It does not prevent you from clicking through to the full-size image.

A thumbnail is hidden if a site council member has flagged the photo as containing nudity. If you see an image that should be flagged and isn't, let a member of site council know (please provide us with the IMAGE_ID).

Goofing off? No, actually I'm ALLOWED to surf when it's not busy. But I do work in an educational institution, which naked photos, however tastefully done, are inappropriate.

My original post was only to ask advice on how the 'hide nude photos' option worked. Like I said, I'm a new member, and unsure of how things work around here. If there's been discussion of this before, I'm unaware of it. There seems to be some pretty strong opinions about it anyway.

Nudes aren't the only thing you get in trouble for at work the drug related ones and the violence ones can get you in trougle at work too.

Also the option to hide nudes doesn't always work. There has been complaints in other threads about what is coming up on the homepage right now.

HELLO I was commenting on another thread about the lack of ability to hide nude photos when it is suppose to be implimented into the site. I have never once personally had a problem with any of the nude photos but my real problem has always been the recent rash of drug and violent photos lately!!!

STOP putting words in my mouth!

1 of the 3 'nude' photos on the front page don't actually show anything except arms. Why should that be hidden?

One the first point I do all my voting at the very beginning of the challenge. It is after midnight here and my little boy is asleep. But there are thumbnails of things I don't like him to see popping open in front of me during the daytime and he does occassionally pass by the pc and see what I am viewing. Do I want him to see a photo of some a bloody covered toilet and a mock murder scene. No not if I can prevent it. Do I want him to see the photo of someone shooting up...definately not.

I have been saying all along what one person considers offensive may not be to someone else. The site needs to offer a control for those who don't want to see a photo after voting options to hide it!

I remember a few people complaining repeatedly about dead animals and how sickening they were during the fauna challenge, and seeing them repeatedly made them sick. To others they weren't affected by them.

On the second point...
Many people work in jobs where they have downtime or are premitted internet access while at work during breaks and lunchtimes. In the past few months this site has become less kid friendly and work friendly and it shouldn't have became that way but it did.
Originally posted by jmsetzler:

I think there could be a reasonable solution to this problem...

When someone submits a photo to a challenge, there could be a checkbox that says:

This photo could be considered 'offensive' to some viewers.

The photographer could check this box. Each viewer could have an option in their preferences to hide photos that could be offensive in the same way that 'nude' photos are hidden.

This would not be completely foolproof because some photographers would simply not check off that thier photo could be offensive. However, I believe that some or most of them probably would if asked to do so.

I believe that a photographer KNOWS when their photo is going to be offensive to some, with a few minor exceptions. I think that most of those photographs are intended to be that way.

Thats about what I am saying we need the option to not see photos again after seeing them!

makes no sense.

Maybe you should read everything first I don't have a problem with the nudes myself. I do take offense to some of the other photos popping up after voting. As for being at work it was mentioned in another thread where someone can go to a website as long as there are no questionable materials viewable. As of the other day there was a post about 1st and 3rd place in the nude challenge being visable. Why can't we have a check box for every photo so we don't have to see what is view as offensive in certain circumstances?

how can you though when there are nude photos popping up even though you have them turned off?

I started this thread because I think it is worth some thought putting a control into it were each individual can hide what they don't want to see again! Then when I came back I saw the silly joke made about the nude kitties and that wasn't even called for!!!!

I'm sorry if you don't want to think this is a serious matter but the truth is with the recent trend here controls need to be placed.

And a special note to General E, I maybe shouldn't have stated it the way I did earlier but it was a member of site council who was helping to make it a joke instead of taking it serious.

I thought this said WEB SITE SUGGESTIONS not lets make a joke out of a parent who doesn't want her little boy seeing drugs and violence here!

JUST FOR THE RECORD I DO ALL MY VOTING LATE AT NIGHT I TRY TO AVOID MAKING COMMENTS WHEN MY LITTLE BOY IS AROUND SO I DON'T HAVE THE OFFENSIVE PHOTOS OPENING UP IN FRONT OF HIM.

With this being summer and him being here all day only thing that is safe for me to do here is the forum. Simply because he is still in that learning to read state and he can't read fast enough to read things posted here before I would see something he shouldn't see.

For those viewing at work it is the suggestive nature of the photo. Imagine having the ablity to use the internet at work during your lunch and opening up the homepage after the nude challenge ended and having 2 of the 3 photos say HELLO to your boss as he walks by and you were totally unspecting because you have your options set to hide all nudes after voting but you are now surprised cause they are on your homepage.

It's true... I dont' take it seriously.

I stick by my post. It's not the responsibility of this site to keep you out of trouble at your workplace or control what your children see.

There are controls that could be put in place, but I would rather see that time spent on improving other aspects of the site.

Setz you don't have kids do you?

Making it more friendly to the parent who is a member by making it a little more kid friendly would be a big improvement.

I do not have kids. If I did have kids, I would not expect this site to make modifications along these lines. I would simply take that responsiblity into my own hands.

I would never expose my own children to anything that I felt was inappropriate. If it meant that I couldn't browse certain websites at certain times, then so be it :)

I really don't expect much anymore from this site. I made this as a suggestion only to have it turned into a joke. I take a lot of precautions not to let my little boy see things I don't want him to see but sometimes it doesn't happen.

I am a parent.. I have total control over what my kid or my boss sees on this site I don't enter dpcchallenge.com into the URL box when they are around.. Easy.. However I'm quite happy for my child to see almost any image that I myself would be happy to look at.. and I've certainly seen nothing on here to worry about..

If you want parental control take it.. this is a photography site not some sort of nanny system...

Actually those were the third and fourth points, not first and second. I'd be interested to hear your comments on my first and second points (the considerable amount of overhaul necessary to make the change you are requesting, and the impact on site performance).

If you're not willing to discuss the cost/benefit tradeoff, this whole conversation is pointless.

Where? If you can link me to a nude whose thumbnail is showing up, I will flag it as a nude and fix the problem.

Read the beginning of the thread. You and Setz were making it a joke about nude cats!

For me, I do not want site performance to decrease, just to implement something that SHOULD be regulated by the viewer.
There are other ways around it. There is a "screen" (they have it on possible viewable computers in the ER where I work to protect confidentiality) that goes over your monitor that allows only a certain angle of viewablility. Set up your computer so that there is a wall behind you instead of open space (unapproachable from the back). Drape a sheet over your head and monitor. Get creative here!
The "it is not my fault or responsibilty" attitude of us Americans is getting ridiculous. Buck up and fix it yourself, or quit bitchin!
