1. Maybe start with this thread.

2. Try a forum search for "microstock" and you'll find much previous discussion.

3. Sign up for Shutterstock through my link so I can make money (commissions) off your photos too : )

Almost made 1/2 of the price of my dSLR back and most of the pictures are from my 3 megapixel cameras. So for me it's been worth it.

I have been making about $5.00 / picture/ year on what I have uploaded at the various micro stock agencies. However, the big 4 bring in basically all the income. They are

Shutterstock
Fotolia
Dreamstime
Can Stock Photo
Istock,

Ok, well that was 5. Fotolia is actually getting pretty good, they also offer a 20 cent payment for every accepted file which is a pretty good offer.

Anyhow, so if you have 100 images accept that means (according to my figures) that you would make about $500/year. 1000 images would be $5000 images per year.. and so on.

I am pretty new to microstock and have found the DP forums a great help, I wanted to support what has been said and add that I have really enjoyed microstock the few months I have been doing it. I am with the following sites (and my links to them):

ShutterStock
iStockPhoto
Dreamstime
Big Stock Photo
123 Royalty Free
Fotolia

I just barely got accepted by ShutterStock, but it is fast becoming my best seller. I highly recommend this site. 123 Royalty Free was started well for me but has dropped off a lot lately. Fotolia is just getting started for me. Things are still pretty slow. I think it is an up and comer though. They ahve spent a lot of pney growing theri site and providing other promotions. Dreamstime was slow for me at the start, but seems to be picking up a bit. Big Stock Photo is slow and steady for me. iStock is also slow and steady. All of these have been good to work with for me. Each seems to have its pros and cons, but to say again in a different way, ShutterStock is doing better for me right now than all the others combined. The others will hopefully start picking up, but ShutterStock was amazing at how fast it picked up. I hope that helps a bit.
