I know all the stuff about so-called troll voting patterns being kicked out of the system before votes are calculated.

But, why not go a little further to discourage the behavior and suspend those that vote in such patterns?

I've been thinking about this, since I seem to receive a disproportionate number of troll votes... haha, ok, actually I just stink... but anyway, I bet they let the trolls keep voting once they have been identified. Suspending or alerting them would lead them to create new identities and thereby reduce dpc's control over eradicating their trolly scores.

i think this question has been posted before but, if a person entere's a challenge, how about they can only vote on a challenge they have not entered,
this would run into problems for the member challnges because we only have one, but what about the open challenges.

The trolls that vote ONLY ones are easy enough to identify and deal with.

I'm much more worried about the sneaky ones that give 1,2 or 3 to the really good photos, then balance it out with 9's and 10's to the shockers that they KNOW won't do well - that way they won't be identified as trolls.

Those ones you can NOT weed out easily.

I (and others) have asked for that many times, but I have never actually seen any official response to it.

Re the member challenges: with the way their size is going, we badly need "exlusive" ones of those, too.

you are correct, this site is rappidly growing, and i would love to see more dont to accomodat that growth.

i think the real question is ::

wait for it ...
wait ...

Suspend them from what ?
gallows/ trees/ ladders/ ropes/ chains/ ...
(or may be "by" what .. gonads necks toes ... remember that scene in "a man called horse " ..)
just a thought ..

I almost always only vote in challenges I have entered for the following reasons:
1. I am very familiar with the topic.
2. I have a sense of the topic's difficulty.
3. I'm interested in seeing what others have done with the same idea I have worked on.
4. The topic interested me and I'm still interested.
5. The "other" topic did not interest me and nothing is going to inspire me to spend time with it.

I vote on challenges I'm in for the same reasons KaDi did. If anyone thinks I score pics lower because mine is in there... ha! I tend to score higher and think mine sucks even more. But I do like to see what others have done in the same challenge and do appreciate the effort it takes to get the pic to go with the challenge topic.

What trolls? :P

Just people with different opinions.

Ah, there are no such things as trolls. Who would go to that sort of trouble for a virtual ribbon, which they won't get anyway because the shear bulk of votes has such weight. I've never seen a bad photo at the top.
02/01/2006 02:42:55 PM · #12
I agree with KaDi and Melethia, and if there are a few people that want to go in and mess with the voting for their own sick reasons, then I'm sure they will find ways to do it. Unless and until the SC wants to change the way they are handling the voting, then I have no problems. I also have not seen a bad photo at the top.

If people spent as much energy working to improve their photography as discussing trolls the already great quality of the images submitted here would be even better.

I feel that the quality of peoples photos are great, but at the same time they are getting slapped down by a group who is dishonest.

The problem is not the mythical trolls and never has been. The truth is that the average DPC voter gives low scores and that is why overall image scores are low.

For example... the average score YOU give is 4.4668.

All good and well - WHAT THE HELL IS A TROLL - I see a troll as some ugly creature (not my mother-in-law) living under a bridge... ;-}

Trolls spread their love evenly....so it's all a wash in the end.

What they give to you, they also give to Librodo, Heida, Scalvert, Kiwiness, jjbeguin and so on and so on....

Personally...I try not to take it all so seriously but I admit that sometimes it does get under my skin.

Cheers!

Simple Solutions
On everyone's profile is listed the average vote cast. How about above or below that the actual votes given:

For example:
Challenges Entered: 64
Votes Cast: 7879
#1: 250
#2: 250
#3: 300
#4: 1,000
#5: 3,000
#6: 1,579
#7: 500
#8: 500
#9: 500
#10: 500
Avg Vote Cast: 4.8562
Votes Received: 16538
Avg Vote Received: 5.1686

We'd know the trolls, and they'd have an incentive to shape up.

Alternately, and this might be harder to do, but when you click on an image, have anotehr button that documents the vote to the voter - you vote, that vote is recorded and kept in the database - no more anonymity is the downside, but other sites do it.

I have suggested this same thing before.

I can honestly say, that I rarely vote in challenges I haven't entered. I am just not as interested. I suspect that if this rule was put into place, there would be a lot less votes.

Ok, I do not like the low votes any more than the next guy/girl but....what seems to be the problem here? There is a first place and a last place and the rest in between. The actual score given is irrelevant. There are checks and balances in place to catch duplicate accounts, abnormal voting practices, etc. Why fix something that is not really broke?

I'm with Steve on this one, anyway when is the last time you've seen JJBeguin, Heida, Scalvert, Librodo complain about low votes thay got, and they do get them!?
02/01/2006 04:50:13 PM · #25
What would be really funny to see is someone complaining about excess 10s, which also happen with a frequency close to that of the excess 1's, that is, not that often.
As many times as I've run detailed statistics on voting for individual photos, I've never seen more than a few "excess" 1's or 10's over and above what would be expected from the gaussian distribution of the votes for that image. Folks just refuse to believe that, but it's true. The very few that do exist and get past the vote scrubber are probably due to voters who vote "1" for a specific reason. You see them most often on images that are controversial in some regard.
