Can anyone tell me what is the source of this image :

Yes, congratulations, it comes from a Film!
Now, little question : why do you think that it comes from a film? Why could'nt I have taken it from my DSLR? Is it the colour? the grain? the desaturation? Why everybody recognize the film look?

Except the actor (of course), what makes all movies photos recognizable?

Because Tom Cruise is a very recognizable celebrity. If this would have been taken on an indie film set with an unknown actor in his place, most people could have interpreted the image as a news photo rather than a shot from a movie.

My question to you is why are fishing for the comment? Did you actually take this image or are your trying to prove a point that images taken from films can be passed off as original photographic creations?

Just asking.

No, I did not take this photo! It comes from a web site on the film.
Actually I love movies, and I try to know why everybody recognize movies photos and why everybody know that my holidays photos are taken by me!

Two things...

One, the equipment used to capture the image is completely different in terms of quality.

Two, a film crew can spend days to weeks building and prepping a location to make it "perfect". When you go out on vacation, most of your shots (Just like many of us.) are close to spur of the moment captures.

Could be that film are shot with $200,000 cameras coordinated by a team of professionals including a director, camera operator, lighting expert, and more - to be followed by professional post-processing frame by frame for maximum effect?

If you want encouragement, watch the unprocessed footage in deleted scenes and other areas of special features. Post-processing counts for a lot of the final look.

I bet American Horse would have an opinion on the matter, as he works in the business.

This is an example where the still has captured the movement flow that would be apparent in the film. There's a clear compositional line from top left to bottom right which has been interrupted by the gap in the queue to focus our attention of Tom and Dakota. This structure to a frame, i guess, would be unlikely to happen in real life. Also, although things have improved since the days when dabbing a smear of grease on an actor's face indicated the personal experience of apocalyptic disaster, the actors all look a little relaxed and clean for a species on the brink of anihilation!

Because everything in the image is geared toward the main actors. They are isolated in the scene by the composition (color mainly, but others as well) -- almost to the point of looking out of place.

To put it another way, the film is not about anyone or anything else -- it is all about the main actors -- the stills carry that forward.

I agree with conglett, there is a certain look that you expect from a hollywood film. Try looking at a documentary and seeing if that looks less...shiny is the word I think of. Everything just a little too perfect, event the dirt is clean...

Also, there may be subtler clues that hasn't got anything to do with the content of the image, but the image itself, i.e. aspect ratio, which tends to be a dead give-away as to the source

What is that hollywood film look? Color? Brightness? Saturation? Contrast?
