I think it's appropriate to question whether or not it is appropriate that we devote resources on saving animals when there are so many fellow human beings who are in dire situations.
The amount of money I spend each day on feeding my two cats with commercial pet food is roughly equivalent to, or more than, the daily incomes of a significant percentage of the globe's human population. I think there's something wrong with that... |

I guess I found it funny as I did not take it serious - I would never think that animals are not a vital part of our world. They do have a purpose here and yes, we should try to help when we can.

Actually the £100k or so spent helping this single whale could have done a lot more if it had been spent on whale-related conservation projects so that's a little off-target.
And the original joke was that - a piece of humour, not some proposal to disregard all animals or something! |

I happened to ber watching the BBC that day, and I can certainly agree with the spirit of this "piss-take" on the situation. While I agree that the right thing to do was to try and help this whale find it's way home, I think that the publicity the event garnered was on the far side of ridiculous. Thousands turned out to the banks of the Thames to watch, effectively stopping how many businesses and services in London? And costing employers how much money? And taking time away from how many news stories that actually had relevance and importance? As the BBC might put it; "bollocks!"

Agreed. :)
It's always disappointing when animals of any sort die due to our interference on nature. But if we get upset whenever a possibly off-color joke is made, we'll never get to relax and enjoy life. :) |
